Delhi Capitals (DC) have been having a horrendous time in the IPL 2026 tournament. And this might also affect their ownership structure, as they are owned by two entities, GMR Group and Parth Jindal’s JSW Group.

Meanwhile, DC, who had an excellent start to their IPL 2026 tournament, have gone on a losing streak, losing three of their last four games. In fact, they have lost three of those games at their home in Delhi.

Delhi Capitals bested by Chennai Super Kings in Delhi

Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings clashed on May 5 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. DC batted first after captain Axar Patel won the toss. The home team’s top order failed completely, as quick dismissals of Pathum Nissanka (19), KL Rahul (12), Nitish Rana (15), Karun Nair (13), and Axar Patel (9) left DC at 69/5.

It was only thanks to Tristan Stubbs' 38 in 31 balls and Sameer Rizvi's 40* in 24 balls with four sixes that DC managed to post 155/7.

In response, CSK lost Ruturaj Gaikwad for a single-digit score, while Urvil Patel made 17 runs. But it was Sanju Samson, who made 87* with 7 fours and 6 sixes, and added 114 runs with Kartik Sharma, who made 41* in 31 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes, ensuring that CSK won the game by 8 wickets.

GMR Group proposes a three-year ownership control tenure

The existing two-year cycle for dual ownership of the Delhi Capitals could change to a three-year cycle for each investor. Cricblogger has reported that the suggestion, which is thought to have come from the GMR Group, intends to guarantee more consistency in the franchise's operations.

JSW Group, that owns the 50% stake in the DC franchise, is said to give a thought to the proposa; after the IPL 2026 season ends.  The reported further added that the discussion on the idea of three-year ownership cycle night also depend on Delhi's chances of qualifying for the playoffs by finishing in the top four, which are diminishing fast.

Preliminary talks about the three-year ownership tenure have reportedly started, given that it aligns with the IPL’s three-year cycle between mega auctions. The Delhi franchise is one of the eight original teams in the Indian Premier League but is yet to win the IPL title, having played the final only once in 2020.

Three-year ownership cycle could solve many things for the Delhi Capitals

The proposal’s timing is not out of blue. This proposal gives each owner group a chance and time to execute, modify, and improve their vision, as it will become align with the IPL cycle. Because big auctions are usually spread out across several seasons, the IPL ecosystem itself functions in longer cycles.

That consistency will be better served by a three-year ownership tenure, which would enable decision-makers to create teams with longer-term planning, develop player roles throughout seasons, and maintain continuity in support and leadership personnel.

Interestingly, the Delhi Capitals have generally had trouble when the GMR Group has been in charge of the team's operations. In contrast, during the Jindal Group's tenure, the team has advanced to the knockout stages several times. The pattern is difficult to ignore, even though it might just be a coincidence.

Delhi Capitals’ chances of qualifying for the IPL 2026 playoffs

After the loss to Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals now have played 10 games, losing 6 and winning only 4 games, and have 8 points to their name. Their chances of qualifying for playoffs are fading fast after a string of losses.

Among teams that are still mathematically alive, only the Mumbai Indians and the Lucknow Super Giants are below them. Even in tie situations later in the season, DC are vulnerable due to their negative NRR, which is among the worst in the competition.
