Australian cricket team is inching closer to an inevitable transition in the coming months, and Cricket Australia bosses are eyeing what lies ahead. The current generation of stars is at the fagends of their careers, while coach Andrew McDonald is also entering the final year of his contract.

CA’s Todd Greenberg has opened up on the situation and McDonald’s potential role in shaping the future, hinting at a possible contract extension.

Andrew McDonald’s future as Australia head coach in focus

The current Australia head coach took over in 2022 after a very well-documented intense period under Justin Langer. Players began revolting against Langer, and McDonald was handed the keys to the change room.

The former fast bowling all-rounder has been around the team since 2019, and his contract is set to expire after the 2027 World Cup. However, looking at the current state of the team, he could earn an extension, as revealed by CA’s chief executive Todd Greenberg on Wednesday.

“Yes, we are talking to Andrew about his contractual status and what that means going forward. He's held in incredibly high regard by the Cricket Australia board and by all of us. I think he has done an outstanding job, and the results tell you that,” said Greenberg, as quoted by Cricinfo.

“But in saying that, there's also an eye on what's coming next, and there's no doubt that there'll be a transition of this team, and we want to make sure that we can have oversight of that so that we protect and thrive into the next phase, whoever that might be," he added.

Big tasks ahead for McDonald

The 45-year-old could be entering the most crucial and complicated part of his coaching career with the national team in coming months.

Alongside Cummins as the captain, McDonald helped Australia win the World Test Championship 2023 and the subsequent World Cup in India. Furthermore, they drew an away Ashes series and won a home one, alongside success against India in 2024/25.

But, as the World Cup year approaches, a lot of players in the current setup are in their mid to late 30s and entering the final stages of their careers.

An away Border-Gavaskar Trophy and Ashes is approaching and the team has a lot to ponder upon and should McDonald be given an extension, he will probably play the most instrumental role in Australia entering a new era.
