India Test squad vs Sri Lanka likely to comprise familiar faces apart from Washington Sundar
Now, talking about the India Test squad vs Sri Lanka, familiar faces like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel are likely to retain their spots. It will be interesting to see if Jasprit Bumrah gets picked for the two-match Test series after missing the third ODI against England at Lord's due to a knee injury.
The India tour of Sri Lanka 2026 could also mark the return of veteran allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, who hasn't played international cricket since featuring in the home ODI series against New Zealand in January earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar might be excluded from the India Test squad vs Sri Lanka. Sundar recently picked up a hamstring injury, which ruled him out of the series decider at Lord's.
Although Washington Sundar has yet to prove his mettle in white-ball cricket, he has been a vital member of the Indian Test team. Sundar has played 18 Tests, amassing 937 runs at an average of 44.6. The allrounder from Tamil Nadu was instrumental in India's historic Test win in Brisbane in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21.
He also played a significant role in helping India level the Test series in England under Shubman Gill's leadership in 2025. The BCCI could pick either Harsh Dubey or Saransh Jain as Washington Sundar's replacement if the latter gets ruled out of the Sri Lanka series.
India to face a do-or-die situation on Sri Lanka tour
India have blown hot and cold in the WTC 2025-27 cycle. Led by Shubman Gill, the Indian side has lost four of nine matches, reeling at fifth in the WTC table.
If reports are to be believed, the WTC might include a semifinal stage from its next season onwards. However, as only two teams can proceed to the final this time, India are in a do-or-die situation ahead of the Sri Lanka tour.
Australia and South Africa claim the top two spots in the WTC table with PCTs of 87.50 and 75, respectively. On the contrary, India have a PCT of 48.15, a number significantly less than their competitors.
So, the Shubman Gill-led outfit would be desperate to register a historic series win that can boost India's chances of entering the WTC final for a third time since the tournament's inception.
