The Bangladesh cricket team was excluded from the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup by the ICC last month. The controversial exclusion of the cricket-crazy nation from the showpiece event seems to have created an undesirable ripple effect for the BCCI and the ICC, impacting the tournament’s overall buzz and fan engagement, at least as per a report.
A certain news outlet has stated that the ticket sales of several ICC T20 World Cup 2026 matches, particularly involving the national team has taken a severe hit ever since they got replaced by Scotland.
Eden Gardens ticket sales in jeopardy after Bangladesh exit
As reported by BDcrictime, there has been a visible impact on the ticket sales of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup owing to the late exclusion of the Bangladesh cricket team. The report further stated that the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata seems to have been impacted the most, considering the national team was scheduled to play three Group C matches at the stadium.
Citing a report published by Anandabazar, only 21,000 tickets have been sold for all of Eden Gardens’ fixtures combined, even though the venue has a seating capacity of 65,000 spectators for a single game.
Generally, the Tigers attract one of the largest crowds in the world, especially in home matches and for fixtures hosted by eastern India, given the region’s close proximity to Bangladesh.
Why was Bangladesh excluded from T20 World Cup 2026
Last month, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the government refused to send the Bangla team to India for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The board urged the ICC to relocate their matches to Sri Lanka instead, citing “security concerns”.
BCB’s concerns themselves stemmed from Mustafizur Rahman’s controversial removal from the KKR franchise for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. Rahman was roped in by the KKR late last year, but prevailing geo-political tensions and the rise of attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh prompted the BCCI to remove the senior paceman from the tournament’s roaster.
With BCB remaining adamant on their decision of re-scheduling T20 World Cup 2026 matches to Sri Lanka, the ICC refused to entertain their unreasonable late demands. Instead, the global body replaced the cricket-crazy nation with Scotland on grounds of ICC rankings.
Bangladesh’s initial schedule for T20 World Cup 2026
As per the ICC schedule, the Tigers were placed in Group C of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup alongside Nepal, Italy and two-time winners West Indies and England.
Their matches against West Indies on February 7, against Italy on February 9 and against England on February 14 were all lined up to be hosted by the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The team would have subsequently travelled to Mumbai for a match against Nepal on February 17 at the Wankhede Stadium.
Nonetheless, with Bangladesh’s late exclusion, Scotland were handed a sudden opportunity to step in and take their place in the tournament.
