Jahanara Alam’s serious allegations [Source: X.com]
Bangladesh cricket has landed in serious trouble once again. This time, the Bangladesh High Court has strongly criticised the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for not taking proper action on sexual harassment allegations involving women cricketers.
On Monday, February 1, the court questioned the board’s silence and delays, calling them unacceptable and against public interest.
Legal trouble deepens for BCB
The court’s remarks came after a writ petition was filed by Sabrina Sultana. In its ruling, the High Court asked the BCB to explain why its inaction should not be declared unlawful and without legal authority. The court also stressed that such negligence sends a dangerous message to victims and society.
Jahanara Alam’s serious allegations against BCB officials for inappropriate behaviour
The case gained attention after former Bangladesh women’s team captain Jahanara Alam spoke openly in November 2025 about harassment she faced during her playing career. In a YouTube interview, she revealed that she received indecent proposals multiple times from people linked to team management.
However, she stayed silent for years. According to Jahanara Alam, speaking out could destroy a player’s career and livelihood. She further alleged that certain officials used middlemen to approach her. When she refused or avoided them, she was insulted, humiliated, and treated badly.
Although Jahanara informed senior BCB officials several times, she said the support she received was only temporary. This lack of long-term action forced her to finally speak publicly.
After Jahanara’s allegations became public, the BCB promised an investigation. Initially, a three-member committee was formed. Later, it was expanded to a five-member panel, including senior lawyers, a former Supreme Court judge, and legal experts.
Despite this, the investigation faced repeated delays. First, on December 2, the BCB said Jahanara needed more time to submit her written complaint. Then again, on December 21, the board extended the deadline and promised to submit the report by January 31.
These repeated extensions raised serious questions. As a result, the High Court stepped in and questioned why the board was taking so long in such a sensitive matter.
Bangladesh High Court’s strong stand
In response to the writ petition, the High Court ordered the BCB to clearly explain what steps it has taken or plans to take. Moreover, the court directed the board to immediately follow anti-sexual harassment guidelines until the case is fully resolved.
The judges also showed that transparency and accountability are essential for every institution. Whether it is a school, workplace, hospital, factory, or sports field, complaints of sexual harassment must be treated with seriousness and urgency.
According to Cricbuzz, shortly after the High Court’s order, the BCB finally received the investigation report. However, it is still unclear whether the findings will be made public.
This controversy adds to the growing problems faced by the BCB in recent months. The board has already been accused of acting under government influence and ignoring the concerns of its own players.
