Babar Azam flayed teammate Shaheen Afridi in an intense nets training session. England captain Harry Brook plundered a record ODI century against Sri Lanka in the series decider in Colombo. In other news, India’s Under-19 opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi bludgeoned another half-century in the 2026 ICC U19 World Cup in Zimbabwe.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Tuesday, January 27.

Glenn Maxwell signs two-year BBL extension with Melbourne Stars

Legendary Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will continue to remain with Melbourne Stars for two more BBL seasons. The 37-year-old recently signed a two-year deal with the Stars, just hours before the commencement of the contracting embargo.

Glenn Maxwell has spent a major part of his BBL career with the Melbourne Stars. Apart from the inaugural BBL edition back in 2011-12 where Maxwell turned up for the Melbourne Renegades, the cricketer has since played 123 BBL games for the Stars spanning 13 different editions.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi charts record U19 World Cup fifty

India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi bludgeoned 52 runs off just 30 balls against Zimbabwe Under-19 in the Group 2 match of the 2026 ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup. Opening the innings in Bulawayo, the blistering left-handed opener clattered four fours and four huge sixes, and raced to his fifty from just 24 balls.

Through the course of his knock, Vaibhav Suryavanshi also recorded the joint-fastest half-century by any Indian batter in an Under-19 World Cup match, levelling up with current captain Ayush Mhatre. Suryavanshi’s innings helped India mount 352-8 in 50 overs before bowlers scripted a huge 204-run win for the ‘Men in Blue’.

Babar Azam punishes Shaheen Afridi in nets session

Senior Pakistan batter Babar Azam took national teammate Shaheen Afridi to the cleaners in the nets. As per a social media footage of the Pakistan team training in the nets, Babar bludgeoned Shaheen Afridi for 21 runs in just five deliveries.

It is worth noting that both Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi recently underwent an underwhelming BBL 2025-26 season in Australia. However, both cricketers were still selected by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to represent the Pakistan team in the upcoming series against Australia and the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in India.

Harry Brook muscles 57-ball century vs Sri Lanka

England captain Harry Brook plundered 136* runs off just 66 balls against Sri Lanka in the third ODI of their three-match series in Colombo. Batting first, the cricketer charted 11 boundaries and nine huge sixes, and raced to his century from just 57 deliveries.

The innings marked the fastest ODI century in the history of Sri Lanka vs England matches, surpassing the likes of Jos Buttler and Kumar Sangakkara. Through the course of Harry Brook’s batting blitz, England also mounted 357-3 in 50 overs, courtesy of a complimentary century from senior man Joe Root.

Yashasvi Jaiswal injury update issued
