The 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is just days away, but the tournament has already suffered a significant setback. Several overseas players are reconsidering their participation, with withdrawals and partial availability raising concerns for franchises.

The PSL 2026 is set to begin on March 26, with defending champions Lahore Qalandars taking on Hyderabad Kingsmen in the opening match at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The tournament will feature eight teams, including new venues like Faisalabad and Peshawar.

Jake Fraser-McGurk pulls out before PSL debut

The biggest blow has come for debutant franchise Rawalpindi Pindiz, who confirmed that Australian batter Jake Fraser-McGurk has withdrawn from PSL 2026 due to personal reasons.

The young right-hand Australian, known for his aggressive batting, was expected to play a key role in Rawalpindi's campaign. The franchise shared the update on social media, stating that they respect his decision and will announce a replacement soon.

Although the post was later deleted, team owner Ahsan Tahir publicly expressed disappointment while wishing the Australian player (Jake Fraser-McGurk) well.

Jake Fraser-McGurk’s journey to the PSL squad had already been unusual. Despite being listed in the highest base price category during the league's inaugural auction in Lahore, he went unsold in both the main and accelerated rounds. However, Rawalpindi later signed him directly.

Jake Fraser-McGurk's exit leaves the new franchise scrambling for a replacement just three days before their first-ever Pakistan Super League match.

Rawalpindi squad:

Mohammad Rizwan (c), Sam Billings, Jalat Khan, Yasir Khan, Naseem Shah, Rishad Hossain, Daryl Mitchell, Mohammad Amir, Abdullah Fazal, Amad Butt, Dian Forrester, Laurie Evans, Asif Afridi, Kamran Ghulam, Fawad Ali, Mohammad Amir Khan, Shahzaib Khan and Saad Masood.

Dasun Shanaka likely to skip PSL for IPL opportunity

Another development involves Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka, who is reportedly set to withdraw from PSL 2026.

Dasun Shanaka, who previously featured in the IPL, is believed to be considering a return to the Indian tournament as a potential replacement player.

Although Dasun Shanaka went unsold in the IPL 2026 auction, ongoing injuries in several teams may open up opportunities for late signings.

Dasun Shanaka was signed by Lahore Qalandars for a significant amount in PSL 2026, making his possible withdrawal another concern for the team.

While official confirmation is still awaited, reports suggest that Shanaka is prioritising IPL participation if an opportunity arises.

Exclusive (T20 Tracker): I’ve been reliably informed that Dasun Shanaka 🇱🇰 has decided to pull out of PSL 2026 and is set to join an IPL team.

He was picked by LQ for PKR 2.2 crore in the auction.

Official confirmation awaited.

Glenn Maxwell to join PSL late

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is another high-profile name facing availability issues, though his case is slightly different. According to Hyderabad Kingsmen CEO Fawad Sarwar, Glenn Maxwell will not be available for the entire tournament and is expected to join only in the second half. Glenn Maxwell's partial participation is reportedly due to geopolitical concerns.

Glenn Maxwell had earlier made headlines by opting out of the IPL after a long association with the league, choosing instead to play in the Pakistan Super League.
