Prominent Indian cricketers have recently been summoned for the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearings in West Bengal. The exercise aims to verify voter details and ensure accuracy in the electoral rolls, affecting both residents and high-profile figures in the state.

Jhulan Goswami, the legendary fast bowler and former captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, has now been called for a hearing after discrepancies were found in her father’s name across official documents. The matter was handled remotely, highlighting the flexibility in the ongoing verification process.

Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami also recently appeared for the SIR hearing in Kolkata. His case involved minor inconsistencies in family details, which were resolved efficiently. Both instances underscore the Election Commission’s efforts to ensure all citizens’ voter records are accurate and up-to-date.

Jhulan Goswami summoned for SIR hearing over voter record discrepancy

Jhulan Goswami was recently called for a Special Intensive Revision hearing due to inconsistencies in her father’s name in voter records. His name appeared differently in various documents, sometimes as Nishith Ranjan Goswami and elsewhere as Nishith Goswami.

The notice was sent not only to Jhulan but also to her two siblings. While they were required to attend the hearing physically, Jhulan Goswami was allowed to participate remotely from her residence, resolving the matter without having to appear in person.

As reported by News 18, hearing was part of the Election Commission’s ongoing SIR exercise in West Bengal, which aims to verify millions of voter records within a strict timeline. Officials have been directed to hold hearings for nearly 7 to 8 lakh voters every day.

Jhulan Goswami, famously called the “Chakdaha Express,” retired in 2022 after a remarkable two-decade career. She remains one of the pioneers of Indian women's cricket, holding records for the most wickets in international women’s cricket and second most in Women’s World Cup history.

Before Jhulan Goswami, veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami also appeared for the SIR hearing a few days ago. Shami and his brother Mohammed Kaif attended the hearing at Katjunagar Swarnamayee Vidyapith, providing their passports as proof of identity to resolve minor inconsistencies in family records.

Originally from Uttar Pradesh, Shami has been a resident of West Bengal for many years. He shed light on the responsibility of all citizens to correct voter records when called, highlighting the importance of duty as an Indian citizen and encouraging others to comply with the Election Commission’s process.

Ensuring accurate voter records: Citizens and cricketers participate

The Election Commission’s SIR drive continues across West Bengal, with crores of voters summoned for hearings. Many voter verifications have already been completed, including high-profile figures like Jhulan Goswami and Mohammed Shami, showing that no citizen is exempt from the process.

Both cricketers expressed smooth experiences with the hearings, strengthening public confidence in the system. Their participation serves as a reminder for all citizens to check and correct voter details, ensuring that everyone’s electoral rights are protected ahead of upcoming West Bengal elections.
