We have another match lined up today and we should get underway with that in less than an hour. It is the Eliminator. The winner plays the Mavericks tomorrow in Qualifier 2 and the loser goes home. For the very first time, the Lucknow Falcons storm into the finals of the UP T20 league. With the kind of performance, they have put on show today, one can also go as far as saying that they are the favourites. Meerut Mavericks who just didn't turn up today have to take the long route now and beat the winner of the Eliminator tomorrow to join the Falcons in the final.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Lucknow Falcons Captain & POTM): "[Should bowlers be captains in T20 cricket?] If it is UPT20 league, then surely (laughs). The way you mentioned that Lucknow was losing in the semi-finals for the last 3 years. I felt that it could break today by the way we started with the bat in the powerplay. I was nervous with 140 on the board. I won't lie. However, I knew that if we start well in the powerplay, we can defend it. Everyone responded beautifully.
[Did you give any pep talk today?] No, I didn't have to give any pep talk. Everyone knew how the wicket plays. They knew that it is not entirely batting friendly and there is something for the bowlers. When the players walked in, they looked very pumped up already. We have many senior players in the side, so we didn't need a pep talk. The two wickets in the first over boosted everyone's morale.
[Who listens to you more? Your daughter or the ball?] I listen to my daughter (laughs).
[On his plans with the ball] The plan was simple. I saw that it was swinging a lot early on, so the plan was to try and get LBW and bowled in play. There was a little up and down bounce in the surface, so the plan was to bowl full. Then after my wickets early on everyone did the same and looked for LBW and bowled.
[On his perfect execution with the ball] Everyone talks about line and length. I believe that if you run in well, load and land well, 99% of the times the ball will fall in the right areas. That is the formula for me. If something goes wrong in the match, I don't look at my lengths, I focus on my run up, loading and landing.
[On his longevity and skills over the years] Just keep it simple. Yes, I have learnt a lot of variations over the years but I only use them when the wicket is very batting friendly. On wickets that offer something it is all about doing the basics right.
[On him padding up in the very first over but coming late to bat] It is a secret and strategy. I will say it if I meet you in private. Can't say it here. Can't say that before the finals. I will tell everyone after it."
