So, that is it from myself, Karthik Raj and my co-commentator, Dev as we wrap up the coverage of this fixture. A note of thanks to our scorer, Paras Yadav as well. Do stay tuned and join us for a lot more cricketing action on Sunday.
S Sreesanth (Mumbai Spartans Captain):"(Thoughts about the crowd) Thanks a lot to the crowd. Your MLA is also here. Thanks to my entire team and Chadwick Walton for taking those catches. The plan to have a slip was Walton's.
(About his six in the final over) God's been very kind. We needed this win. I was fortunate to hit a six. Kind of felt that he (Abu Nechim) would bowl a slower delivery. No complaints to the groundsmen."
Bharat Chipli (Player of the Match): (On his performance after scoring 42 off 22 following 47 in the previous match) “I realised that medium pacers were slightly easier to hit, so I targeted them, and it worked out. I had to plan the innings. It’s not easy to hit the spinners because the ball is turning a lot and there isn’t much bounce. I tried to capitalise on the Powerplay, and that worked well.
(On whether he aims to play longer innings) Obviously I would like to play longer innings, but when you’re batting first in T20 cricket, you have to score runs quickly because you don’t know what a good total is.
(On the difference between batting first and chasing) When you’re chasing, you know the target and can plan accordingly. But when batting first, you always have to play with aggressive intent.”
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: BHARAT CHIPLI
10:51 PM IST: A superb bowling performance from the Mumbai Spartans as they restrict India Tigers to 143/6 to seal a 17-run win. A nice comeback from the Spartans after they lost their first game against India Captains.
Chasing 161 for victory, India Tigers got off to the worst possible start as they lost Amitoze Singh and Tillakaratne Dilshan within the first three balls off the innings with the Spartans' skipper, S Sreesanth getting some wonderful swing. Amit Paunikar also fell in the 5th over courtesy Suboth Bhati's bowling which meant that the Tigers could only get to 40/3 at the end of the Powerplay.
Left-arm spinner, Manan Sharma delivered another telling blow by castling Samit Patel in the seventh over. Then, the duo of Kamau Leverock and Kuldeep Hooda tried to build a partnership although runs didn't come at a quick rate. Leverock eventually accelerated with 18 runs coming off the 11th over. However, Sreesanth brought Amit Verma into the attack and the leg-spinner trapped Leverock for 49.
Thereafter, the Spartans' spinners ensured that the asking rate kept rising. The equation came down to 42 off 12 and then 26 off 6 with Pawan Negi and Kuldeep Hooda providing some late entertainment. Yet, it wasn't enough as the Tigers could only end up with 143/6.
Earlier on in the match, Chadwick Walton fell early but the pair of Mausif Khan and Bharat Chipli batted positively in the Powerplay. Mausif fell off the last ball of the Powerplay with the Spartans getting to 69/2. There was a middle-overs collapse as the duo of Shadab Jakati and Samit Patel seemed unplayable. Jakati, in particular, was outstanding as he finished with figures of 3/24.
The Spartans somehow still had a handy finish to their innings with the duo of Shoaib Khan and Sreesanth producing a few invaluable boundaries. In the end, the Spartans settled on an exact total of 160/8 off their 20 overs.
