Daniel Hughes (Player of the Match): "Those small little totals can be tricky. So it was just no panic, just hit the gaps and run hard and then the boundaries will come. was really just the plan. And then we just got out of the line at the end, so it was good to see us get the job done.
Yeah, I think it was just like with the new ball. If we bowled pace on, it was nice. The ball was coming on nicely, but as soon as you bowled cutters, it was holding in the wicket. So it was just great to see our bowlers adapt after the first couple of overs."

They beat the Hobart Hurricanes by six wickets here in Launceston and grab two points to move to the top of the points table. Those were tough batting conditions but the Sixersâ batters applied themselves and did well to chase down 136 with four balls to spare. The Hurricanes tried hard but failed to defend the total and get off to a losing start to the Big Bash League 2023.
Chasing 136, the Sixers got off to a shaky start as they lost James Vince in the third over on five. Josh Philippe was joined by Daniel Hughes and both started building a partnership. Both kept ticking the scoreboard and found regular boundaries. Corey Anderson got the better of Philippe as the Sixersâ opener fell on 16 in the sixth over. Skipper Moises Henriques walked out to bat at number four.
Henriques and Hughes stitched a good partnership in the middle overs and didnât allow the required run rate to creep up. The pair put 47 for the third wicket before Henriques departed on 20. Hughes kept going strong from the other end and kept the Hurricanes at bay. He was joined by Jordan Silk who struggled at the start but hit his straps as he got his eye in.
Hughes brought up a well-composed fifty off 45 balls. Silk also found the fence as the equation was brought down to 10 runs from 12 balls. Nathan Ellis stepped up and dismissed Silk on 23. Hughes kept his cool and smashed a six on the last ball of the penultimate over to bring down the equation to one from six. Curran hit the winning runs as the Sixers got across the line with four balls to spare. Hughes remained unbeaten on a run-a-ball 60 and played a match-winning knock for the Sixers.
