So that brings an end of today's coverage. Do join us tomorrow as Brisbane Heat lock horns against Melbourne Stars at Manuka Oval in Canberra. Tata from me, Akshay Bhide and my colleague Kingshuk Kusari. Bye Bye.
So the Sixers gain 1 point thanks to the Bash Boost. But the Hurricanes get 3 points and have defeated the defending champions. Both teams opted not to use the X-Player but the Power Surge rule has come in effect brilliantly for both the teams resulting in wickets as well as quick runs.
Tim David | Player of the Match: It wasn't an ideal start, but the openers are good players but that happens sometimes. We batted well enough in the end, and our bowling did extremely well to get us through. A lot of new guys in our group who have really bonded well together and have contributed together as a team tonight.
Tim David is the Man of the Match for his match-winning knock of 58 of 33 balls that comprised of 8 fours and 1 six.
Earlier in the day, Dan Hughes won the toss and opted to bowl first. They had the best of the starts as both the openers Will Jacks and D’Arcy Short departed for ducks. Colin Ingram and Peter Handscomb stitched a good partnership for the third wicket until Handscomb was stumped off O’Keefe while trying to accelerate. But it was no stopping Ingram as he brought up his half century. Tim David joined Ingram and both started to take on Sixers’ bowlers. The batting powerplay was taken while both were in the middle and that provided the momentum they needed. Ingram was dismissed by Christian in 16th over for 55. Tim David provided some lusty blows in the end and brought up his maiden fifty in Big Bash League. 82 runs were scored in last 6 overs and they ended their innings on 178/8.
The target for them was 179 and similar to the Hurricanes, Sixers too lost their opener Philippe in the very first over. Vince joined Edwards and stitched a very good partnership. They found regular boundaries and both the batsmen brought up their fifties. They put 116 for the second wicket until Vince departed in 14th over. But they ensured that they get a point in the Bash Boost as they scored more runs at the halfway stage. Jack Edwards was knocked out by Meredith in the 15th over. Silk and Hughes failed to hit boundaries in the death and dismissed trying to hit those big hits. Eventually they fell short by 16 runs.
A strong fight back by the Hurricanes bowlers and they are off to a winning start. The defending champions looked off colour today and they fell short by 16 runs. The pace bowling from the Hurricanes proved to be the difference between the two sides as the Sixers batsmen couldn't get away in the death overs.
