Shabnim Ismail (Hero of the Match):“I don’t think so. I’m slowly getting over that last over. I took one before but was chuffed to get the side across the line today. I always believed to bounce back. I came out today and credit to the captain for trusting me.
Tammy asked me whether I should bowl the second-last set but I said give me the last five and I’ll defend it. I have practiced a lot on my yorkers with the bowling coach and I was always backing myself to nail the yorkers. We just had a firm belief in ourselves to get across the line.
Enjoying my time with the Welsh. It’s one of the biggest tournaments in the world and I’m loving my time in the UK playing it."
Hero of the Match: Shabnim Ismail
22:11 IST, 17:41 Local Time: This game turned on its head right at the end. Ismail registers a hat-trick and helps Welsh Fire steal a win from the jaws of defeat.
Coming in to chase a target of 138 runs. The Phoenix openers took their time but provided a decent start to their side scoring 32 runs off the powerplay sets. Devine (29) who was aggressive lost her wicket on the 31st ball, Jones (48*) replaced Devine, and along with Flintoff (55), she stitched a 93-run partnership and got Phoenix close to winning this game but not close enough. They lost three wickets in the last three balls and went on to lose the game by three runs.
Defending their total, the Fire could not find the wickets early. Griffiths did get rid of Devine but no other bowler stood out for them. Until the final set where Ismail got a hat-trick off the last three balls and won the game for Fire. The Fire bowlers dragged the game for long, and that did work in their favor right towards the end.
With this win, the Fire moves up to the top of the table with seven points. On the other hand, Phoenix facing a crushing defeat today gets stuck in the bottom half of the table.
W BOWLED!!!! Take a bow, Shabnim Ismail. She has done it for Welsh Fire Women. Picks up a hat trick in the last set and defends the total successfully. What a comeback this has been from the pacer. Bowls a good length delivery on off, Wong moves away to the leg side and looks to force it through the off side with a cross bat but is beaten by the pace as the ball hits the top of the off stump. What a finish to this incredible game. The Welsh Fire Women beat the Birmingham Phoenix Women by three runs.
Issy Wong comes out to face the final delivery which is the hat-trick ball as well. She needs to find the ropes if the Phoenix are to win this game now.
