India A will travel to New Zealand now. They have three 4-day games to play there. The series will start on the 24th of October. There is no official word on the schedule of the Australian A players. Most will head back home and join their domestic teams for the Sheffield Shield and One Day Cup.
It has been a really good series for both sides. A highly competitive one. India A started off on a good noted by winning the 1st 4-day game. The 2nd was a tightly fought one.
Australia A flipped it around in the One-Dayers by winning the first two handsomely. They were in a good position to win the 3rd as well but lost their way in the middle and came second.
Todd Murphy collects the 'Winners Trophy' and joins the team behind the 'Champions' board. Time for smiles and snaps!
Todd Murphy (Australia A Captain):"[On the series win] A 2-1 series win is pretty good. We would have loved it to be 3-0 but a lot of positives to come out of the series. All in all, really happy.
[On bowling first today] We had a lot of information while batting first on all of their guys. So, we thought it will be a good challenge for us to see how we go bowling first. Ideally on a wicket like that you would want to bat first. But it was a good challenge for our boys.
[On taking wickets in the middle overs] The whole series we have been able to take wickets in the middle overs. That is something we identified at the start of the series. That was pleasing again today.
[On positives for the group] Yeah for sure. One of the highlights for our group was the bowling speed of our quicks. How exciting and threatening they were. Seeing the batters find a method in these conditions was really exciting.
[On learning as a spinner] Yeah, definitely. Any exposure you get in these conditions and playing against some good players of spin is really good. Taking plenty out of it.
[On the overall tour experience] Awesome. We have loved our time. We have been here for over a month now. Hopefully we are back again soon."
Nathan McSweeney (POTS):"[On his good series with the bat] Yeah, very pleasing to come into new conditions and spend some time in the middle. It is always nice. A series win in India is no easy feat. It is a very tough place to play cricket against tough competition. So, well done to our boys. Nice to get the series win.
[On playing spin so well in the series] Coming to India as an Australian it is a heavy spin focus. You watch how the great Indian players play spin. Virat Kohli on YouTube and try to study how he goes about it. Steve Smith and other Australians as well who have done really well here. Plenty of analysts and there is data given to us as well. It is nice to action it out in the middle and execute fairly well.
[On moving from 4-day cricket to One-Dayers] I think I missed out in the first innings of a couple of those games. Anyone who watched the 4-day stuff would know that it got hard to bat as the game went on. In the second innings of both games, I got 30s. Where it counts especially playing in India is that first innings in long form cricket. It is easier for batting and also sets up the team to win the game. When I come back here, hopefully I get another opportunity, and I will focus on that."
Player of the Series: Nathan McSweeney
Vipraj Nigam (POTM): "[On his batting performances] I feel in the One-Day format if you want to contribute as a lower order batter, these 30-40 runs at the backend are very important.
[What was the chat with Suryansh Shedge?] The chat with Suryansh was about batting for a long time. We knew that the wicket was going to wear down and we will get assistance in the second innings, so it was just about taking the game deep.
[On his bowling] All thanks to the coaching staff. Especially Sunil Joshi sir. We knew that the wicket was slow and the plan was to get the batters onto the front foot as runs were flowing easily off the backfoot.
[On the spin trio] The main thing between us was communication. We knew we needed to have that between us to be successful."
Player of the Match: Vipraj Nigam
Ruturaj Gaikwad (India A Captain):"[On the win] Thankfully they won the toss and elected to bowl first. That really helped our cause. You can see that batting first, posting a decent total gets you on the winning side. It was good to bat first. Yes, we were in a crucial situation in the middle but it was a good partnership from Suryansh and Vipraj to get us back into the game.
[On the importance of the start given by Prabhsimran and Priyansh] Yes it was important. That is the best phase when the ball is coming onto the bat. The Aussies did it in the first couple of games. They capitalized on the first 10 overs. I think Priyansh and Prabhsimran got off to a really good start and happy for that.
[On the bowling unit] Yes, overall, in all three games they have been bowling really well. They have been sticking to their strength. When you play on low scoring pitches, you expect a lot from them. Overall, in this series they did a good job.
[Positives in the series] Definitely a lot of positives. Barring Arshin everyone got an opportunity to play. I think everyone chipped in. Difficult series to be honest. We did not adapt to what the situation was. They adapted really well. Credit to them. Overall good experience coming here and playing in Pondicherry."
