Henry Thornton is the player of the match: "We played some really good cricket. The boys are having a really good time out there and that helps in winning. I have been really happy, I wanted this opportunity for the last three years and I have worked very hard to get it. I thought if we can get Cartwright then we can seal the game after that. It's a great win for us. I have been doing this for three years in grade cricket, I have got a good foundation and I know what I am doing, it's just about pushing your game a tad at this level and to keep things simple. I love the group, we have been in a bubble for a while. Everyone is welcoming and the coaching staff has been brilliant. Every game I play is bonus for me."
A convincing victory for Strikers in the end. They make it three wins off the last three matches and get the fifth spot at the table. Adelaide Strikers were sent in to bat first after the Stars won the toss and elected to field.
Strikers' playing without their key man Rashid Khan put up a good batting display on the back of brilliant batting display from Jonathan Wells (73 off 49 deliveries). He added 61 runs for the fourth wicket with Jake Weatherald (17 off 23) who would have liked to score at a quicker pace but the partnership helped the Strikers steady their ship after they lost their top three in the first nine overs.
It was a combined effort from Sam Rainbird (2-25), Clint Hinchcliffe (2-21) and Ahmed Daniyal (1-37) as they picked up six wickets for the Stars, though a bit on the expensive side. All the fast bowlers used their variations well and made nice changes in their pace. Brody Couch bowled well for figures of 0-25 in his four overs but failed to chip in with a wicket.
Stars started in a clinical fashion as Glenn Maxwell hit a six off the very first ball of the inning but they slump back quickly as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and lost half of their side for 79 runs. Hilton Cartwright was the only batter who batted with intent and scored 49 off 35 deliveries at a strike rate of 140 to take the Strikers closer to the target. Lack of partnerships in the middle made sure the Strikers fell short by 23 runs.
Henry Thornton bowled a magnificent spell of fast bowling and picked up four wickets for 26 runs. He was supported well by the bowling group as they all bowled economically and chipped in with a wicket at least. Peter Siddle was brilliant with the ball and gave away nothing for the batters to take advantage of. He also picked up Joe Burns' wicket with an off stump full toss.
Matthew Short (1-23), Harry Conway (1-26) and Fawad Ahmed (1-33) also picked up a wicket apiece. Fawad started his spell brilliantly picking up Marcus Stoinis on the very third ball of his spell but was taken to the cleaners in his second spell when he returned to bowl at the death. He was hit for three sixes in an over by Cartwright as he gave the Strikers fans a scare by reaching closer to the total, a task which seemed quite impossible at the halfway stage.
