MI vs CSK: The El Clásico of IPL
Two of the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League, CSK and MI, have defined the tournament over the past 19 years. They have built a rivalry that has come to be known as ‘El Clásico’ of the IPL.
With five titles each, the joint-most in IPL history, the two franchises have set benchmarks for consistency, success and fan following.
Whenever MI and CSK lock horns, the clash takes on added significance, shaped by years of high-octane contests, including multiple final encounters. Moreover, their dominance in the league is reflected not only in the trophies they have earned across 18 editions, but also in their overall performances.
Notably, MI leads the all-time winning charts with 155 victories in 283 matches, followed by CSK with 144 wins in 259 games.
What makes the CSK vs MI rivalry so special?
The MI-CSK rivalry stands a notch higher for the legacy and consistency both franchises have built. While MI have nurtured and boasts a core of Indian internationals such as Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and now Tilak Varma.
On the other hand, CSK have focused on blending the experience of international stars with emerging Indian talent, including Ruturaj Gaikwad and, now, Ayush Mhatre.
5 Players who won the IPL title with both Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu featured in 39 matches during his time with MI and won 3 IPL titles across 2013, 2015, and 2017.
However, his fortunes as a batter changed when he joined the MS Dhoni-led CSK that won the title in 2018. In a single edition, Rayudu scored 602 runs in 16 matches for Chennai and registered his first IPL hundred that year.
Legendary Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, like Ambati Rayudu, is a 4-time IPL winner who has won three championships with the Mumbai Indians, and his fourth title came with the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2018.
3. Parthiv Patel (CSK – 2010, MI – 2015 and 2017)
The Ahmedabad-based wicket-keeper batter, Parthiv Patel, won his maiden IPL title with Chennai Super Kings (2010) and then achieved the same feat with Mumbai Indians twice in 2015 and 2017.
4. Tim Southee (CSK – 2011, MI – 2017)
Veteran New Zealand pacer Tim Southee is one of the few players who have won IPL trophies for both CSK and MI. It is worth noting that he also made history by winning a title in his debut season with CSK in 2011.
Later on, he joined Mumbai Indians in 2016 and the following season, won the league with the franchise.
5. Karn Sharma (MI – 2017, CSK – 2018)
Karn Sharma holds a unique feat in IPL history: he won the title in three consecutive seasons with three different teams. First, he won the championship with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and in the consecutive years with MI and CSK.
