Top 5 highest team totals by India in T20Is [Source: X]
The Indian cricket team achieved a massive feat on January 31, 2026, with a tremendous batting fireworks display at Thiruvananthapuram in the fifth T20I against New Zealand.
Batting for the full 20 overs, India piled up 271 runs for the loss of just five wickets, riding on a blistering knock from Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, along with Hardik Pandya’s late blitz.
However, this was neither India’s first nor their highest team total in T20I cricket. The Men in Blue have previously come close to the 300-run mark, along with registering several other high team totals. Hence, let’s take a look at the highest totals scored by India in T20Is.
5) 247/9 vs England
The list begins with a not-so-modest 247 scored by India against England in February 2025 during England’s tour of India. In that match, India’s firebrand opener Abhishek Sharma put on a stunning show at the Wankhede Stadium, smashing 135 off just 54 balls, which included 13 sixes and seven boundaries, to power India to the mammoth total.
While the rest of the batters failed to make significant contributions with modest scores, it was largely on the back of Abhishek’s innings that India reached such a high total and then went on to restrict England to just 97 while defending the target.
4) 260/5 vs Sri Lanka
The next side that was dismantled was Sri Lanka, as the Men in Blue posted a massive total of 260. This came on December 22, 2017, during Sri Lanka’s tour of India, when Indore witnessed a classic “Hitman” show. Rohit Sharma smashed a breathtaking 118 off just 43 balls at a strike rate of 274.41, hitting 10 sixes and 12 boundaries.
However, Rohit was not the lone destroyer, as KL Rahul complemented him with a 49-ball 89 to further boost India’s huge total. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 172, handing India an emphatic 88-run victory.
3) 271/5 vs New Zealand
The third entry on the list came when Ishan Kishan rose to the occasion against New Zealand in the fifth T20I on January 31, 2026. After the openers faltered, Kishan took charge and unleashed a whirlwind 43-ball 103, which included 10 sixes and six boundaries.
Skipper Suryakumar Yadav also chipped in with a quick 30-ball 63 to complement Kishan’s knock. Hardik Pandya, batting at number five, struck at an impressive rate of 247.06 to further boost India’s total, as New Zealand’s bowlers also conceded plenty of extras, pushing India to a massive 271.
2) 283/1 vs South Africa
India’s second-highest innings total in T20I cricket came against South Africa, with Tilak Varma shining with a blistering 120 off 47 balls alongside Sanju Samson’s 109 off 56 deliveries. The duo tore apart the Proteas’ bowling attack to pile on a mammoth total.
India raced to 73 runs in the powerplay and, during the middle overs, added 157 runs without losing a wicket, driven by Tilak Varma’s blitzkrieg. With 18 extras and a massive 210-run partnership between Samson and Varma, India posted 283 runs and went on to win by 135 runs as South Africa were bowled out for just 148.
1) 297/6 vs Bangladesh
The highest innings total for India in T20Is is 297 runs, which came against Bangladesh in 2024 during a bilateral series. In the third T20I, Sanju Samson once again proved to be a nightmare for the opposition, scoring 111 runs off just 47 deliveries. He struck at a rate of 236.17, hitting eight sixes and 11 boundaries.
Suryakumar Yadav’s 35-ball 75 and Hardik Pandya’s explosive 18-ball 47 further added to the misery of the Bengal Tigers. Rishad Hossain endured the toughest outing, conceding 46 runs from his two overs without taking a wicket.
In response, although Litton Das tried to steady the chase with a 25-ball 42, Bangladesh could manage only 164 for seven, handing India a massive victory by over 133 runs.
