Hardik Pandya has become one of the hottest names in Indian Premier League (IPL) trade market after reportedly deciding to leave Mumbai Indians (MI) following the franchise’s disappointing campaign in IPL 2026.

According to the latest reports, three IPL franchises are interested in signing the star all-rounder. However, among those teams, Mumbai Indians' biggest rivals, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), have reportedly emerged as the frontrunners to complete what could become one of the biggest trades in IPL history.

However, the deal is not as simple as it looks, as one major issue has reportedly come between Hardik Pandya and the five-time champions.

Hardik Pandya Reportedly Wants Captaincy At CSK

According to sports journalist Rohit Juglan, Hardik Pandya has made one thing very clear during the discussions. The Indian all-rounder reportedly wants the captaincy if he joins CSK.

However, CSK are not willing to accept that demand. The franchise reportedly sees current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad as the long-term face of the team and is not interested in replacing him as skipper.

"Hardik needs captaincy at the moment. But CSK is absolutely in no mood to put anyone else as the face of the franchise other than Ruturaj," the journalist said.

Therefore, the captaincy has become the biggest hurdle in the much-talked-about MI-CSK trade, with Hardik Pandya being involved in a direct shootout with Gaikwad.

MS Dhoni Could Play The Role Of Peacemaker

Meanwhile, reports suggest that CSK legend MS Dhoni could step in to help resolve the situation. Notably, MS Dhoni shares a close relationship with Hardik Pandya, and their mutual respect has been visible over the years.

At the same time, Ruturaj Gaikwad also enjoys a special bond with Dhoni. The former India captain has mentored Ruturaj throughout his journey at CSK and has backed him on several occasions.

In fact, when Dhoni decided to step down as CSK captain ahead of IPL 2024, he personally handed over the leadership duties to Ruturaj Gaikwad, showing his confidence in the young batter.

Now, it is believed that Dhoni could speak to either Hardik or Ruturaj and convince one of them to continue without insisting on the captaincy. As a result, his role could become crucial if CSK want to complete the high-profile trade successfully.

Which IPL teams can fulfil Hardik Pandya's demand?

Although talks between Mumbai Indians and CSK are still ongoing, there is no final agreement yet. Therefore, if CSK fail to reach a solution, several other franchises could quickly enter the race for Hardik Pandya.

One of the biggest contenders is Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). After Ajinkya Rahane's retirement, the franchise is looking for a new captain and also needs an experienced Indian all-rounder.

Hardik perfectly fits both requirements. After all, he has already proved his leadership skills by guiding Gujarat Titans to IPL title in 2022 and then taking them to another final in 2023.

Apart from KKR, Delhi Capitals are also keeping a close watch on the situation. According to reports, Axar Patel is currently involved in trade discussions. If Indian all-rounder leaves the franchise, DC could be looking for a new captain.

Moreover, the team would also need an experienced Indian all-rounder who can contribute with both bat and ball. While they have overseas fast bowlers like Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi, they might need a reliable Indian option as well.
