Marnus Labuschagne Not Alone! Australia Players Who Need To Deliver In South Africa Tests

The Australian squad have been picked for the all-important South Africa Test tour. The squad features several names who have been given the opportunity despite their recent failures or lack of experience in red-ball cricket.

South Africa has already been a tough nemesis for the Australian side, especially after snatching the WTC Final Trophy in 2025. Hence, every player will be charged up to deliver their best in the African conditions where the World Cup 2027 will also be hosted next year. 

However, amid them, there are a few players who will have to work extra hard to prove their worthiness in the squad to get future selection calls. Let’s take a look at all of them.

1) Marnus Labuschagne

Marnus Labuschagne has been one of the most dependable batters for Australia in Test cricket over the past few years, but his recent numbers have raised serious questions over his position in the side.

Labuschagne has struggled to produce the consistency expected from him, particularly in the last three years, where he averages just 24.69 from his last 43 Test innings without a century.

His form becomes even more concerning when considering that, since returning to the Australian Test side after being dropped, Labuschagne has managed an average of only 24.58 across 13 innings. Hence, the South Africa tour will be a crucial test for the right-hander.

Possessing extensive experience in Test cricket and having previously shown his ability to occupy the crease for long periods, Labuschagne remains a player with the potential to make a strong comeback. 

The South Africa tour, therefore, could become a defining phase in Marnus Labuschagne's career. At 32, he still has enough cricket left to revive his fortunes, but another series of failures could make it increasingly difficult for the selectors to continue backing him.

2) Matthew Kuhnemann

Kuhnemann is a talented left-arm spinner for the Australian side who debuted for the team in the ODI side during the 2022 tour of Sri Lanka. However, his major contribution for Down Under came in the red-ball setup, where, while touring India, in Indore, he claimed 5 for 16 to set up a victory.

His expertise has been in Asian conditions, mostly where he has picked 25 wickets from 9 innings at an average of 22.20. Hence, the South Africa tour will be a tough test for the bowler who has mostly proved himself in the Playing XI. 

Despite being effective, Matthew Kuhnemann’s strengths have not been particularly explored by Australia in home conditions. That is why his case becomes more prominent for the South Africa tour.

Possessing the potential to be a breakthrough spinner, Matthew Kuhnemann last featured for the side in February 2025; hence, if he is given a chance in the Playing XI against the Proteas, he will be eager to redeem himself and prove his case as a natural and regular selection for the Australian Test side.  

3) Matt Renshaw

Matt Renshaw is another player in the Australian squad who will enter the South Africa tour with plenty to prove, especially after making his return to the Test setup following a poor patch. 

The left-handed batter was once viewed as one of Australia's brightest long-term opening prospects, having announced himself with a century against Pakistan at the SCG in only his fourth Test.

However, Renshaw's promising beginning could not be converted into a consistent Test career. Across 15 Tests and 25 innings, he has scored 653 runs at an average of 28.39, with his unbeaten 184 against Pakistan remaining his only century.

More importantly, his numbers outside Australia have remained a major concern, with the batter averaging just 19.11 in away Tests.

His record against South Africa makes the challenge even tougher. Matt Renshaw has scored only 62 runs in five innings against the Proteas at an average of 20.66, while his only previous Test in South Africa produced just 13 runs across two innings. 

Renshaw's recent comeback has also not provided the ideal start. His latest Test appearance against Bangladesh in Mackay ended with only eight runs, meaning he will head towards South Africa without a substantial recent Test performance to fall back on. 

That makes the upcoming tour an important opportunity for the Queensland batter to show that his selection is more than just another chance based on his potential.
