Hardik Pandya is in serious demand as three IPL franchises are chasing him ahead of the 2027 season. Despite not having the best of IPL campaigns in 2026, the Mumbai Indians captain could be a subject of a trade deal as the likes of KKR, CSK, and DC are fighting it out for his signature.

Three seasons ago, Hardik became the Mumbai Indians captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. Under his leadership, MI have not been at their best, but nobody can deny the talent and the skill set Hardik possesses, as teams are interested in a trade deal.

Why CSK, DC, and KKR are interested in trading Hardik Pandya?

Hardik has done exceedingly well in the T20 format, and he has been a match-winner, not only for his IPL team, but for Team India as well. He can bat anywhere in the middle-order, and is one of the best finishers of the IPL.

Moreover, on any given day, the all-rounder can chip in with 4 overs, and that makes him a brilliant weapon in T20s.

• In 162 matches, the all-rounder has racked up 2955 runs, with a strike rate of 146. Also, he has 82 wickets under his belt, and that makes him a dangerous commodity.
• Teams can use him as a middle-order accumulator, and he can also be a proper finisher at numbers 6, and 7.

Chennai Super Kings

What are the problem areas for CSK ahead of IPL 2027? They certainly need a world-class finisher as MS Dhoni’s future is uncertain. Shivam Dube is not a finisher, and neither are Kartik Sharma, Prashant Veer, or any other middle-order batter.

Hardik can solve this finishing problem for CSK as he can bat at number 6 and can take the burden on his shoulders. Moreover, the team also requires someone who can chip in with quality overs in the death. Time and again, Hardik has delivered the goods for India with the ball in the slog overs, and he can be useful in this role for CSK.

With Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy under pressure, there are also rumours that Hardik could be a front-runner to become the next CSK skipper. Hence, the team is fighting to secure him.

Kolkata Knight Riders

If CSK has a couple of major issues ahead of IPL 2027, so do the Kolkata Knight Riders. With Ajinkya Rahane retired, KKR are in desperate need of a new skipper, and Hardik’s arrival will solve that issue.

Under his leadership, the Gujarat Titans won the IPL in 2022 and reached the final in 2023. The Baroda player will bring in his experience as a leader, and that can be one of the major reasons why the Knight Riders are trying to lure him.

Unlike CSK, KKR’s finishing department is sorted, but the Indian star could be made to play at number 4 as an accumulator. If he plays at number 4, Rinku Singh and Rovman Powell will be used as finishers by the franchise.

For GT, Hardik batted at 4, and he became the glue for the entire batting lineup. KKR could use him in a similar way in the IPL 2027.

Delhi Capitals

Reports are that the Delhi Capitals could give away their captain, Axar Patel, in a trade deal to acquire Hardik. With Axar gone, the Indian all-rounder could become the front-runner for the captaincy role (if he joins them).

There is also KL Rahul in the captaincy contention, but Hardik has more experience and will be a dynamic leader for the Capitals. Moreover, the franchise has one more problem area that the 32-year-old could solve - their bowling woes.

The Capitals don’t have a quality Indian pacer who can create problems for the opponents. While they do have Mitch Starc and Lungi Ngidi, those are overseas options.

Final conclusion - What should be Hardik's final decision?

All three teams need Hardik Pandya in some capacity, and one can argue that Hardik has a tough decision to make if a trade deal comes in front of him.

Judging by the requirements of all three teams, CSK needs him the least. Even if Gaikwad is replaced as captain, Sanju Samson is there to replace him. Moreover, even if they don’t buy the Mumbai Indians captain, then Jamie Overton can be used as a finisher.

Going to DC is also a solid shout, but even if he gets the captaincy, he won’t be the sole decision-maker as the team also has senior players like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul.

However, if he goes to KKR, multiple problems will be solved. The team will get a world-class captain, and Hardik will be the sole superstar of the team with maximum control over decision-making, something which Gautam Gambhir enjoyed during his KKR days.

Hence, if three offers arrive on his table, Hardik should be tempted to go to KKR and help them win their fourth title.
