Delhi Capitals start IPL 2026 from April 1 [Source: X]
The Delhi Capitals will be back for IPL 2026 with renewed optimism to challenge for the title and end their 19-year-long wait to have their hands on the elusive trophy. Under the newfound leadership of Axar Patel in IPL 2025, they got off to a flier before a dip in form derailed their campaign and finished outside the playoff spots.
Ahead of the IPL 2026 edition, they have filled in some gaps in the squad, released the out-of-form players and are all set to fight for the playoffs and subsequent title bid again. As they begin their campaign against the Lucknow Super Giants on April 1, we take a look at the squad analysis, SWOT and their expected finish at the end of season 19.

Strengths of Delhi Capitals
1. High-quality batting depth
Led by the experienced KL Rahul at the top of the order, followed by the likes of David Miller, captain Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs in the middle-order, they have a plethora of quality options to bat in the top-7.
In the last two seasons, Abishek Porel has been consistently giving them starts, which puts the likes of Pathum Nissanka, Ben Duckett and Prithvi Shaw on the bench.
In the middle, they bat deep with Ashutosh Sharma’s hitting prowess at 7. Another promising youngster, Sameer Rizvi and an experienced Karun Nair are their backup options, who can bat as impact players. They have also roped in Nitish Rana from the Rajasthan Royals, which makes them less dependent on the overseas top-order options.

2. Explosive finishers
Ahead of IPL 2026 auction, one of the things the Delhi Capitals had sorted was the settled finishers, who have a role clarity and consistently stepped up throughout the last season. The finishers department will be led by Tristan Stubbs, who is their leading run-scorer over the past two seasons.
The Indian options in Ashutosh Sharma, Sameer Rizvi and Vipraj Nigam will be batting below Stubbs, and all of them have proven their ability to go all guns blazing from the word go.
| Criterion | Innings | Runs | Strike Rate |
| Tristan Stubbs | 13 | 300 | 150.75 |
| Ashutosh Sharma | 9 | 204 | 160.62 |
| Vipraj Nigam | 8 | 142 | 179.74 |
| Sameer Rizvi | 4 | 121 | 153.16 |

Base price buy, David Miller, who will bat 4/5, has good chemistry with Stubbs, which will prove effective in IPL 2026.
3. Outstanding overseas pacers
Last season, they bought Mitchell Starc to lead their bowling attack, and despite going for some runs, he picked 14 wickets in just 10 innings and has been in brilliant form right from the Ashes series. After his T20I retirement, he did not play the T20 World Cup and will come into the IPL well-rested, which is a positive for DC.
Alongside him, to complete the four overseas players in the XI will be Lungi Ngidi, who has been South Africa’s go-to bowler for a while and got 12 wickets in 7 matches of the T20 World Cup. Ngidi can bowl across phases of play and has developed handy variations, especially the deceptive slower balls, which have been his USP in recent times.
Their backup overseas pacers include Dushmantha Chameera, who has picked 55 wickets in 37 T20s since January 2025, which is the most among their bowling unit. The fourth and final overseas pacer in their IPL 2026 squad is Kyle Jamieson, who played the IPL 2025 final and is an excellent operator of the new ball, with an ability to swing the ball upfront.
With these four options in place, they can pick any two and rely on them to perform well on the given day.
| Criterion | Mitchell Starc | Lungi Ngidi | Dushmantha Chameera | Kyle Jamieson |
| Innings | 16 | 39 | 37 | 35 |
| Wickets | 24 | 36 | 55 | 36 |
| Economy | 9.47 | 8.20 | 8.59 | 8.37 |
| Avg/SR | 22.9/14.5 | 27.4/20.0 | 20.8/14.5 | 29.2/20.9 |
| Best figures | 5/35 | 4/31 | 5/24 | 4/12 |
| 5W | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 |

Weaknesses of Delhi Capitals
1. Lack of proven frontline spin options
Kuldeep Yadav will be their lead spinner in IPL 2026, with a few consistent seasons behind him. He will have a chip on his shoulder to perform well after Varun Chakravarthy toppled him for the first spinner’s role in the Indian T20I team.
Captain Axar Patel, who can bowl across phases, will be the second spinner of the squad. The duo can do the job on most days, but in case of any injury or form concerns, they will need to rely on the domestic options, led by Vipraj Nigam.
Although the likes of Tripurana Vijay and Ajay Mandal provide finger spin options, they have not had any international or IPL exposure, which means a significant drop in quality. Nitish Rana can chip in with a few overs, but is another part-time option.
Opportunities for Delhi Capitals
1. Auqib Nabi to strengthen the case for India call-up
The Jammu and Kashmir pacer, who was their costliest IPL 2026 auction buy for INR 8.40 crores, has been in supreme form in the domestic circuit. In the recent Ranji Trophy triumph, he picked 60 wickets, alongside 15 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at an economy rate of under 7.50 and another 14 wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Ahead of IPL 2026, he is already knocking on the India doors, and if he can perform well under the IPL pressure, he will strengthen his chances of earning the maiden India call-up soon.
2. Use horses for courses
The Delhi Capitals have one of the most dynamic squads in IPL 2026, with every base covered in the first-choice XI as well as the backups. Apart from the frontline spinners, they have a choice to rotate any player according to venue and opponents at will, especially in the overseas players department.
Threats for Delhi Capitals
1. Decision-making under pressure
The last season was a prime example of the issue with the Delhi Capitals’ decision-making under pressure. While they were cruising towards a top-4 finish, Axar Patel’s tactical frailties were on display in some of the matches, which cost them dearly by the end of the season.
After a season gone, they will expect him to keep his composure and get the job done to bid for the top-4 spots.
