England and Italy have a long sporting rivalry when it comes to football. However, in cricket, both sides have never played against each other in any format. But that is now going to come to an end as the first-time WC participant, Italy, will play their first-ever cricket match against the inventor of the sport, England, as both sides will face off each other in a Group C clash of the T20 World Cup 2026 in Kolkata on Monday afternoon.
Italy come into this fixture after registering a 10-wicket win over Nepal. It was a big confidence booster for the side after they lost their first group fixture against Scotland by 73 runs. Against Nepal, Italy first bundled out the Himalayan nation for just 123 runs. Leggie Crishan Kalugamage picked up three wickets. Later, the Mosca brothers, Justin (60*) and Anthony (62*), chased it down inside 13 overs.
The Italians have to win their remaining two fixtures if they want to become the second team (after West Indies) from their group to qualify for the Super 8s.
Italy's original skipper Wayne Madsen suffered a shoulder injury in the first game against Scotland and has been resting since. According to reports, he can get fit in time for the England game or the last group stage match against West Indies. If he gets fit, then he will take over the captaincy from Harry Manenti and batter Marcus Campopiano will have to sit out.
England also arrive in this fixture on the back of a win. The side defeated Scotland in their last game by five wickets. This marked England's first-ever T20 WC victory over any European nation. Chasing a target of 153 runs, England completed their chase inside 19 overs, thanks to a brilliant knock of 63* off 41 balls by middle-order batter Tom Banton. In the first innings, leggie Adil Rashid performed well by picking up three scalps.
England are also in the same position as Italy. They have to win their final group stage game if they want to qualify for the Super 8s, along with West Indies, without any net run-rate consideration.
The English side hasn't faced any player injuries yet but the team has looked off-colour.
Who will win in the first-ever T20I match between these two sides? Join us at 2 PM IST and local time on Monday for the live coverage.
