12:37 PM IST, 8:07 PM Local Time: The defending champions, Central Stags, have been knocked out of Super Smash 2025ā26. They needed a win to secure a spot in the finals, but their spirited effort went in vain as they lost the match by eight runs via the DLS method.
Earlier, Central Stags won the toss and opted to chase, sending Auckland Aces in to bat. The Aces got off to a flying start, led by an aggressive opening stand, and despite losing a couple of early wickets, they raced to 67/2 at the end of the powerplay with Colin Munro leading the charge. Munro then combined with Lachlan Stackpole in a rapid 63-run partnership for the third wicket, keeping the momentum firmly with Auckland. Munro smashed 55 off 30 balls before departing, while Stackpole followed up with a superb 66 off 36. A brisk cameo from Cam Fletcher (40) ensured the Aces finished strongly, posting an imposing 219/5 in the rain-curtailed 19-over contest.
The DLS target was adjusted to 219 runs for the Stags, and the chase began with early intent, but the Stags lost Dean Foxcroft (9) and Will Young (15) inside the first four overs, which briefly stalled their momentum. Dane Cleaver then played a positive hand, scoring 36 off 21 balls, to keep the innings moving before he was dismissed with the score at 102/3.
Skipper Tom Bruce led the revival with a commanding knock of 95 off just 50 deliveries, smashing eight fours and six sixes while anchoring the chase superbly. He found excellent support from Josh Clarkson, who played a crucial unbeaten cameo of 46 off 29 balls as the Stags remained in the hunt deep into the innings. The pair added a vital 108-run partnership for the fourth wicket, keeping hopes alive despite the steep asking rate.
The equation came down to 19 runs off the final over, but Bruce and Clarkson failed to take their side over the line. The skipper was run out on the penultimate ball of the match, while Clarkson remained unbeaten on 46 runs.
Aucklandās bowlers held their nerve in the closing stages, with Angus Olliver picking up two wickets.
