Wellington has produced an absolute classic out here! What should have gotten over long back came back to life because of one man, Logan van Beek. However, sport is not always that fair and eventually the Stags emerged victorious! The Kiwi Carnival brings non-stop action as we head to Hamilton tomorrow. Northern Knights take on the Canterbury Kings!
On this note, I, Manan Mehta would like to take your leave on behalf of my colleagues Dev Rajawat and Asraj Khan! See yaa later!
Tom Bruce (Central Stags Captain): "Yeah, pretty happy to get the win. Got a little uncomfortable in the end but happy to get the win. Yeah, we do not plan for being slow with the over rate. So it was tough to pull an extra fielder in. We will do better with the time next time around.
Yeah, happy with my performance. Always good to contribute with the bat. I love the Super Smash, and I love the Stags as well. Yeah, we punched strongly today and that is what we ask from the boys. So happy to gather a win."
Tom Blundell (Wellington Firebirds Captain): "Pretty exciting to be honest. Nearly 400 runs. They batted really well. Three guys from their side. We came close. Logan was amazing in the backend but just fell short.
Our execution can be better with the ball. We will be back in a few days here again. There will be a fresh wicket that day so more runs hopefully. The crowd certainly enjoys that."
Angus Schaw (POTM): "Ahh yeah I feel a bit relieved here. I was also a bit nervous in the end. I felt I might let one go through my legs or something. We had some tough times on the road but a good win to achieve today.
Happy to get some shape with the new ball. I did well to keep it tight and the rewards came my way luckily.
Yeah, we have a week off now. We may just hang out on the beach or something like that. Some time off the cricket will do good."
Player of the Match: Angus Schaw (2-23 in 4 overs)
Time for the post-match presentations...
12:20 PM IST and 7:50 PM Local Time: Central Stags win by 2 runs! My hands are on fire taking you through that final over! Phew! Wasn't that an absolute cracker of a contest. Logan van Beek brought back life into a contest that was long dead. He could not pull it off eventually but should be extremely proud of his effort. Let's do a quick recap of what all happened in the game today!
The Central Stags won the toss and elected to bat first. Their batters certainly live up to the expectations. They had an early jolt and were 21/1. However, post that they had two thundering partnerships. Firstly, Dean Foxcroft and Dane Cleaver stitched an 87 run stand in just 50 odd balls to take the score to 108/2. That is when Foxcroft was dismissed for a well-made 44.
Captain Tom Bruce joined Cleaver, and they smoked the opposition at a quicker rate. They brought up 54 off 27 balls. Powdered the score to 162/3. Cleaver was dismissed for a well-made 67. Bruce continued not out till the end and finished with 55*. The Stags ended with 197/3. It looked above par by 15-20 with the wicket predicted to slow down. The pick of the bowlers for the Firebirds was Michael Snedden with 1-35 next to his name.
The chase did not start on the best note for the Firebirds as they were 0/1 after the first ball. They lost Rachin Ravindra soon too as they were reduced to 22/2. Skipper Tom Blundell led the counterattack. He did not get bogged down by the early wickets. He fought fire with fire and played some sublime shots. Got to a 30 ball 50. He was also making sure that his side is going better than the required rate as he powered them to 102/2 in 10 overs.
However, that is when the Stags through their golden arm Foxcroft managed to dismiss Blundell. He walked back for 67. With Muhammad Abbas not timing the ball that well, the Stags made sure they slipped in a few dot balls and quiet overs. In that span they took 3 wickets as well and reduced the side to 139/5. The equation at that point was 59 off 29 and it looked very steep. With every passing over the wicket slowed down and the run scoring was an uphill task.
It came down to 51 off 4 overs. To make matters worse, they lost the well set Muhammad Abbas for 46 at that point. When it looked like the Stags had bagged the match, Logan van Beek stepped up to scare them big time. The equation came down to 20 off 4 balls! Logan van Beek with a couple of fours and a six got it down to 4 off 1 ball! Toby Findlay who was bowling the final over, held his nerve to execute a fine low full toss. The stags sneaked a 2-run win. It was never supposed to be this close, but they will be happy with the points!
The pick of the bowlers for the Central Stags were Angus Schaw (2-23) and Brett Randell (2-31).

1 Toby Findlay holds his nerves! He has just bailed himself out of a lot of embarrassment out here. What a game have we had here in Wellington! Logan van Beek, take a bow! He is on the losing side but he has played an absolute blinder here. Low full toss outside off stump, Logan van Beek cannot get underneath it and punches it hard to the mid off fielder. Just a single possible. The Central Stags win by 2 runs! JUST!
