That's it from our coverage of the first T20 match of 2026! Canterbury sealing a well deserved victory over Central Stags by 36 runs! That will be it from our coverage. Ninaad Dixit here signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Deepak Prakash and scorer Sahil Khan. Stay tuned for more action from around the world.
Chad Bowes (POTM): "It was a great partnership with Tommy (Latham) up front. He set the tone early and got us going, so I just tried to hang in there with him before it became my turn to put some pressure back on the bowlers. It gave us a perfect platform for the rest of the guys — Mitchell Hay and McConchie — to come in and help set up a really strong total.

There wasn’t a whole lot of discussion, to be honest. We know our own plans and strengths and trust each other to apply them when needed. We get on really well and have built some good partnerships in the past, so we understand each other and just allow one another to play freely.

It doesn’t always translate into big performances, as you know, but you try to trust your work, trust your processes, and stay as present as you can. Hopefully, the numbers add up over time, and we’ll just keep tracking that."

1:47 PM IST, 9:17 PM Local Time: Canterbury win by 36 runs and start 2026 on a high! A terrific performance with the bat to add 194/7 after losing the toss then a fantastic bowling performance to restrict the Central Stags for 158/8.

The Stags won the toss and decided to chase at Hagley Oval. Chad Bowes (62 off 37), Tom Latham (43 off 26), Cole McConchie (35* off 21) and Mitchell Hay (31 off 16) played solid knocks helping Canterbury to 194/7, skipper Jayden Lennox picked up 3/29 for the Stags.

Kyle Jamieson and Fraser Sheat started off well with the ball for Canterbury reducing the score to 4/2 in the 2nd over. Will Young (37 off 27) and Dean Foxcroft then added 92 runs for the 3rd wicket bringing their side back in the chase.

Skipper Cole McConchie broke the stand with his off breaks and sent Young back in the shed, Foxcroft started his year with a half century and was deceived by Ish Sodhi for 57 in 41 balls. Josh Clarkson was sent back in the same over with Sodhi bowling a tight spell in the middle.

William Clark hit 42 off 21 and kept the chase alive smashing 20 runs in the 18th over to bring the equation down to 44 in 12 balls but Jamieson conceded only 6 in the penultimate over and decided the fate of the match.

Cameron Paul (2/12), Sodhi (2/33), Jamieson (1/23), Sheat (1/27) all bowled solid spells in a combined effort from the bowling attack and led the side to a victory. Stay tuned as we return with the post match presentation.
