Chepauk Super Gillies become the first team to qualify for the playoffs of TNPL 2025.
10:25 PM IST, Local Time: There it is. Chepauk Super Gillies make it five wins in a row. They beat Salem Spartans comprehensively by six wickets to stay unbeaten in this edition of Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025. With this, they have qualified for the playoffs. The Spartans, meanwhile, end their home-leg with a loss.
The opening pair of K Aashiq and RS Mokit Hariharan broke the back of the 161-run chase. Both came out all guns blazing and scored 71 in the powerplay. Finally, the Spartans managed to break the 73-run stand. Mokit Hariharan (32) dragged one back onto the stumps in the seventh over. Narayan Jagadeesan joined Aashiq who continued going strong and raced to his fifty in 30 balls.
Aashiq and Jagadeesan put 52 between them before the former holed out in the deep on 56. Vijay Shankar was trapped in front of the stumps on two. Jagadeesan scored a quickfire 25-ball 50 before departing. Baba Aparajith (10*) and Swapnil Singh (2*) took the Super Gillies across the line in the 17th over to win the game by six wickets.
Earlier, the Spartans were asked to bat first and their openers C Hari Nishaanth and skipper S Abishiek gave them a solid start. Both put 63 for the first wicket before Hari Nishaanth fell on 31. The middle-order batters failed to step up as the Super Gillies stormed back into the contest. Abishiek looked good before falling three short of his fifty.
The Spartans were reduced to 104/6 before Sunny Sandhu and M Mohammed went berserk and gave their side a perfect finish. Cameos from Sandhu (30 off 18), Mohammed (28* off 11) and VS Karthick Manikandan (6* off 2) powered the Spartans to 160/7 at the end of their 20 overs. Prem Kumar was the pick of the bowlers for the Super Gillies, registering figures of 3/19.
