Swapnil Singh is a spin-bowling all-rounder who has built one of the longer careers in Indian domestic cricket, evolving from a teenage prodigy into a late-blooming IPL contributor.
A slow left-arm orthodox bowler and useful right-handed batter, he currently represents Tripura in domestic cricket and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. His journey spans multiple teams, phases and reinventions rather than a single breakthrough moment.
At just 14 years and 355 days old, he made his first-class debut for Baroda in 2006, becoming one of the youngest cricketers to appear in the Ranji Trophy. Though he was among the probables for the 2008 Under-19 World Cup, he narrowly missed selection for the final squad.
Swapnil Singh’s Domestic Career
Swapnil Singh’s domestic career has spanned multiple phases across three different state teams — Baroda, Uttarakhand and Tripura — reflecting both longevity and adaptability. Beginning as a teenage prodigy, he gradually evolved into an experienced all-rounder.
During his time with Baroda, he often played the role of stabiliser in the middle order, gradually learning to pace an innings rather than just support it.
After moving to Uttarakhand, his responsibilities increased as he became one of the senior all-rounders in the side.
Over the years, he has remained a valuable T20 option because of his control, variations, and game awareness. Instead of relying solely on turn, he built his game around angles and consistency.
Swapnil Singh’s IPL Career
Swapnil Singh’s IPL journey has unfolded over many years, marked more by persistence than continuity. He was first part of the Mumbai Indians squad in the inaugural 2008 season, sharing the dressing room with senior players but not getting a match.
His opportunity arrived in 2016 when Kings XI Punjab signed him after a strong domestic run. He made his IPL debut against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. However, there were few opportunities, and he again drifted out of the league setup.
Lucknow Super Giants brought him in as a net bowler in 2023 before including him in the squad, giving him a brief return to the tournament. The real turning point came in 2024 when the Royal Challengers Bengaluru picked him up. Used strategically in key phases, he contributed during a crucial run of victories that helped the team reach the playoffs.
Ahead of the following seasons, Bengaluru retained him, recognising his experience and tactical value.
