09:23 AM IST, 11:53 PM Local Time: What a quality final over under pressure from Naseem Shah as the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots sneak a 5-run win over the Guyana Amazon Warriors. This is the first time the Patriots have got the better of the Warriors while they also stay alive in terms of play-off qualification with this victory.
Chasing 150 for victory, the Warriorsâ opening pair of Ben McDermott and Moeen Ali werenât able to get away as Jason Holder and Ashmead Nedd bowled disciplined line and lengths. The pressure eventually paid off with Waqar Salamkheil bowling Moeen with a googly in the final over of the Powerplay.
As soon as the Powerplay ended, both the Warriorsâ openers
were back in the hut as Ashmead Nedd had McDermott for 21 off 18 balls. Three overs
later, Shimron Hetmyer disappointed the home crowd as he dragged on a length
delivery onto the leg-stump off Naseem Shahâs bowling. Shai Hope held the
innings at one end but with Hassan Khan also falling cheaply in the 13th
over off Dominic Drakesâ bowling.
The key moment in the chase came in the next over though when Navin Bidaisee got a googly to stay low and crash onto the stumps to get the better of the well-settled Shai Hope. The home crowd would have expected another fiery knock from Dwaine Pretorius but the all-rounder couldn't produce tonight as he top-edged an attempted slog-sweep off Waqar to walk back to the hut. Waqar could have had back-to-back wickets to get rid of the dangerous Romario Shepherd but the Patriots opted against a caught-behind review.
With 33 required off 18 balls, the Warriors would have still backed themselves especially with Shepherd out in the middle. Yet, Naseem delivered a superb 7-run over to increase the pressure on the chasing side. Then, Patriots' skipper Holder got rid of Shepherd to put his team ahead before Quentin Sampson struck 10 runs off his first 3 balls to tilt the scale towards the Warriors again. Needing 11 off the last 6 balls, the Warriors lost Keemo Paul off the very first ball while Naseem didn't give anything away even after that as Sampson could only only manage a couple of doubles to fall short by a margin of 5 runs in the end.
Earlier in the match, the trio of Gudakesh Motie, Romario Shepherd and Hassan Khan all took a wicket apiece in the Powerplay to reduce the Patriots to 26/3 after 4.3 overs. Rilee Rossouw's poor form in this season also continued as he scrambled for 14 off 15 before Shamarh Brooks took a wonderful catch at long-off with Motie getting his second scalp.
Mohammad Rizwan still continued to play a lone hand as he registered his fifty before accelerating later on. Navin Bidaisee also chipped in with 22 off 21 as Rizwan was run-out for 85 off 62 balls with a couple of balls left in the innings. Eventually, the Patriots ended up 149/6 which turned out to be just enough to defend.
