It promised to be an exciting contest with two batting powerhouses on show at the Wankhede Stadium, but the match failed to live up to the hype. The pitch was slow and low, and the Mumbai Indians bowlers read the conditions perfectly to restrict an explosive Sunrisers Hyderabad batting line-up to a below-par total of 162/5 in 20 overs.
Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma then got Mumbai off to a flying start, and with the dew setting in, it became difficult for the bowlers to grip the ball as the surface eased out for batting. Despite a late blip at the end, Mumbai got over the line rather comfortably with 11 balls to spare.
Thatβs all from us for this fixture. Weβll be back again tomorrow from Bengaluru, where RCB will lock horns with Punjab Kings. For now, this is Ajay Pal Singh signing off on behalf of my colleagues AkshayaKrishna Polya, Ninaad Dixit, Manish Bishnoi, Paras Yadav, and Aman. Goodnight!π
Will Jacks (POTM): "Yeah, the tournament has been a slow start for the team as well as for me. Personally, it is incredibly frustrating to be honest. A tough start for me to the match. I dropped a catch on the first ball but managed to pull things back. I was a bit late to that as the ball came at him at some pace, but not much else to say, should've caught it.
Taken me a bit of time to settle into the new franchise, comfortable and confident now. Great set up, loads of star players to learn from, trying to take advantage of that. Now we are gelling together. Great win tonight. Hopefully, we can continue.
Playable is a good word. Always ready to do whatever is required for the team. Can bat all the way down at 7 and do whatever is required for the team. As long as there is clear communication on my role, I am happy to do whatever comes my way. Till the team is winning, I don't care.
If you are bowling slower balls, bowl into the wicket. That's what the pitch demanded. I have been working on attacking against spin. I will keep working on it."
Player of the Match: Will Jacks
Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians Captain): "The way we bowled today was very smart and spot on. We stuck to basic plans and figured out that certain deliveries are not easy to hit. That was the game where we kind of squeezed it.
[Surface] It could be a good track, had a nice greenness as well. Deepak bowled a couple of balls that stuck there. So we thought change in pace could be useful. We were trying to mixing it up. Because if you keep on bowling the slower ones again and again, the batters can line you up. We did well with the yorkers as well so they failed to get the rhythm.
[Will Jacks] That is the beauty about him. He has the 3 facets. He can be a gun fielder, he can bowl those crucial overs and at the same time in his batting he has that explosiveness. That's the reason he is a part of the team and we back him.
[On the need to press the accelerator] When we needed 42 in 42 we felt that as a tricky part. We would rather take a couple of overs and not to get too excited and lose a couple of wickets and then all of a sudden we are in shambles. That point of time we realized let's take a couple of overs and the boundaries will come to take the pressure off and that's the reason at the end we pulled the pedal.
[Sunday's game] It's gonna be a packed house. I am sure it's gonna be a great game. Just making sure we rest well a couple of days and Sunday we see them again."
