05:24 AM IST & 07:54 PM Local Time | An absolutely one-sided victory for the West Indies as they wrap up a nine-wicket win with 110 balls to spare. The target wasn’t a big one but the West Indian skipper Hayley Matthews and her opening partner, Qiana Joseph absolutely bulldozed the Bangladeshi bowlers.
Looking to defend 199, Marufa Akter started well with her swing bowling but she lacked enough support from the other end to build pressure. The West Indies were off to a steady start after five overs getting to 20/0 when Sanjida Akter Meghla came in and gave the momentum to the hosts by conceding 16 runs off her first over. From there on, there was no looking back for Hayley Matthews as she started to produce boundaries with regular frequency.
Bangladesh’s strike bowler, Nahida Akter came into the attack in the tenth over and could have struck immediately but she was unlucky not to do so. Qiana Joseph who was batting on 8 missed a slog-sweep and was seemed to have been struck in front but the umpire didn’t think it would have hit the stumps. Meanwhile, Hayley got to her fifty off 44 balls by the end of the 12th over as Bangladesh started to run out of ideas. Soon, Qiana also joined in on the fun as she picked the right deliveries to go big.
Soon enough, the West Indies brought up a 100-run opening partnership in the 17th over which was the first time the team has achieved that in this cycle of the ICC Women’s Championship. The Bangladesh captain, Nigar Sultana tried various bowling changes and even brought on Rabeya Khan as the sixth bowler but that nothing worked. The big-hitting Qiana eventually got to her maiden ODI fifty off 65 balls in the 21st over as the West Indies continued to cruise.
The openers even brought up the 150-run stand and just as it looked like the West Indies will pocket a rare 10-wicket victory, Qiana Joseph was dismissed by Rabeya Khan for a well-made 70-run knock. Hayley didn’t do that mistake though as she got to her eighth ODI century off 92 balls before hitting the winning runs in the 32nd over!
