That is the end of SA20 Season 3! It has a new champion, MI Cape Town. Sunrisers Eastern Cape found a way to get to the final for the third time in a row, but they fell away against a franchise that was down and out in the previous two seasons but was hungry for glory this time around. The MI family has won all the franchise leagues it has been part of - IPL, Champions League, MLC, WPL, ILT20 and SA20. We have another franchise league finale coming up on Super Sunday from UAE before the focus shifts to the WPL and Champions Trophy.
For now, this is me AkshayaKrishna Polya, signing off on behalf of my co-commentators, Pritam Dey and Deepak Prakash, who, alongside our scorer/analyst Paras Yadav, brought you all the live action of this blockbuster finale. We will meet again. Until then, it's cheers!
Rashid Khan walks up to the podium and he has been handed over the trophy. He lifts it high, and his teammates rush in to join the celebrations! Fireworks explode into the night sky. The party officially begins as the MI Cape Town are the CHAMPIONS of SA20 2025!!
Rashid Khan (MI Cape Town Captain): "Throughout the tournament, I think the way we played, especially tonight and that too, in the final game, was brilliant.
We had a couple of tough years. The highest points across three seasons to start. I feel happy for this team. It was a brilliant effort from everyone. It was about how everyone responded under pressure. I think they deserve this.
Throughout this season, we didn't play a selfish kind of innings. Everyone thought about what the team needed. Even tonight, everyone played their natural game. Even if it is 10 or 15 runs, everyone contributed how we wanted them to be.
Great to have such a bowling line-up - KG Rabada, Corbin Bosch, Trent Boult and George Linde. It gives me the advantage. It's great to be part of this bowling group.
It's amazing to be back for MI Cape Town. I missed last season with a back injury, and when I got a call before the season, I was asked if I wanted to lead the team, and I said yes, absolutely.
It is a special occasion to be part of this MI family. This team has won every competition - MLC with MI New York, IPL with Mumbai Indians, and ILT20 with Emirates. Now, we have the SA20."
MI Cape Town players receive the Champions Medal.
Aiden Markram (Sunrisers Eastern Cape Captain): "Yeah we certainly tried hard. We were always going to be under the pump against a time like MICT. Credit to them with the way they batted and put our bowlers under pressure. Still the boys responded really well and kept them down to 180 which I felt was a chaseable target.
Yeah look, the powerplay was tough. You cannot get away to a flying start if you face-up against world class bowlers like they have. The new ball was swinging around and it was a massive challenge for us. We wanted to get ahead in the game but they made life tough for us. We lost some early wickets and from there on, we were trying to catch up.
Didn't feel it too much to be honest. I didn't let myself think about it. (Being defending champions) But again, to this MI Cape Town team, they have been the best team in this competition and have delivered when it mattered the most. Congratulations to them on behalf of all our boys.
Yeah we fought and fought hard. We probably did not play our best cricket throughout the season but it speaks the talent we have in our squad. The bunch of boys we have are just brilliant as we still managed to get into another final. We will take the positives and comeback again next year."
Sunrisers Eastern Cape players are now receiving the Runners-Up medals!
Marco Jansen (Bowler of the Season and Player of the Season): "For me, it is easy! When I met Dale Steyn in the last season, he asked me not to bowl like a goofball (chuckles).
We adapted well as bowlers. We always found a way to get the team over the line. Whenever our bowlers got a chance, spin or pace, they impacted the game.
Yes, I just try to learn from the top-order batters in the nets. Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs are always willing to help.
I always just try to do what I can to bring the team to a winning position. Sometimes, I am on the lucky side to put the team on the winning side, and it's definitely needed in this format. I just try to do my best whenever I walk onto the pitch."
