David Warner (Player of the Match): "It means a lot for us and the fans, we went close against the Sixers but could not pull it off. Nice to give them the victory today, amazing game. If we win both against Perth and Brisbane, it was key to build momentum today and they are 2 great teams. We rest up and go again.
I was hitting them well in the nets, got a good start and wanted to put the pressure back on the bowlers. You need to stay nice and straight on this wicket. The way they bowled was a blueprint for us and credit to our bowlers, they have a bunch of hitters, and I was happy with how brave they were.
Wes Agar is phenomenal, his execution and plan is clear and that's what a captain loves. It was hard to keep him on the bench after Mac got injured unfortunately."
5:16 PM IST & 10:46 PM Local Time| The match went down to the wire. The Sydney Thunder held their nerve and have defended the target successfully. A comprehensive win for the Thunder as they have defeated the Melbourne Renegades by 8 runs.
Earlier in the day, the Sydney Thunder were put into bat by Will Sutherland on a sluggish surface at the Sydney Showground. The hosts began positively, with their openers finding the gaps early on. Although they lost Cameron Bancroft in the powerplay, David Warner stepped up, anchoring the innings and ensuring the scoreboard kept ticking at a steady pace.
Rutherford's promotion up the order failed to pay off as the new batters struggled to settle on the tricky surface. However, David Warner (86*) stood tall, delivering a masterclass in batting. Anchoring the innings from start to finish, he was the standout performer for the Thunder and their top scorer, guiding them to a competitive total.
A brilliant unbeaten partnership between David Warner (86*) and Matthew Gilkes (23*) propelled the Sydney Thunder to a competitive total of 156/4 in their 20 overs. The bowlers shared the spoils evenly, with each of them picking up a wicket, except for Fergus OβNeill, who went wicketless.
Chasing 157, the Melbourne Renegades got off to a solid start with power hitters Josh Brown and JFM leading the charge. Brown (22) played an aggressive knock but perished right after the powerplay, leaving the Renegades with a decent platform to build on.
The Sydney Thunder seized the opportunity after Josh Brown's dismissal, tightening their grip on the game with disciplined bowling. The Melbourne Renegades struggled to maintain momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals as the required run rate steadily climbed. Laurie Evans (40) fought valiantly in the middle overs, displaying promise, but he lacked support from the other end, leaving the Renegades in a precarious position.
Despite the game going down to the final over, the Sydney Thunder were always under control and have defeated Melbourne Renegades by 8 runs. The Thunder move up to 2nd in the Points Table with this win at Home! Stay tuned for the Post-Match Presentation!
