That's all from this rain-hit contest, folks! For now, this is me Deepak Prakash signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Anirudh Modi and scorer/analyst Bishal Mandal. CHEERS!
Player of the Match: Amelia Kerr
8:28 AM IST, 1:58 PM Local Time: Rain interrupted play twice during the game, ultimately forcing the umpires to call it off on the second occasion, with the Sydney Sixers Women winning by 6 runs via the DLS method. With this win, the Sydney side climb to number three on the points table.
Earlier, after being invited to bat first, Ines McKeon provided a solid start to Melbourne Stars Women but couldn’t go on for long, departing after an 8-ball cameo of 16 runs, with Perry drawing first blood for the Women in Magenta. The Sixers Women bowled in right areas, especially Sophie Ecclestone and grabbed a couple of more wickets in quick succession, putting the Stars on the back foot.
Rain interrupted play briefly, reducing the game to 18 overs per side. The Stars lost wickets at regular intervals after the break, but skipper Annabel Sutherland held her ground, scoring a valuable 42 runs to help the Stars cross the 120-run mark. Rhys McKenna then smashed a six off the final ball of the innings, taking her side to a total of 122/7 in 18 overs.
Sophie Ecclestone (3/18) starred with the ball for Melbourne Stars Women, claiming three wickets. Amelia Kerr (2/36) had a challenging debut in Magenta, as she was taken to the cleaners in her maiden game for the Sixers. However, Perry showed faith in her, entrusting her with the final over of the innings. This decision paid off, as the Kiwi bowler claimed two wickets and conceded only 8 runs in the final over, while Ellyse Perry contributed a solitary wicket.
The target was adjusted to 125 runs for the Sixers, but the Women in Magenta got off to a shaky start, losing Sarah Bryce for just one run on the first ball of the second over. Ellyse Perry (48* off 44) and Amelia Kerr (47* off 41) paired up in the middle and displayed immense composure to tackle the situation. The duo focused on strike rotation and pounced on looseners to keep the run rate in check. They added an unbroken 103 runs for the second wicket before rain halted the proceedings once again, with the scoreboard reading 104/1 after 15 overs.
With the cut-off time nearing and the rain continuing to fall, the umpires decided to call off the game, and the Sixers Women won by 6 runs via the DLS method. Kim Garth was the only bowler for the Stars to take a wicket.
8:22 AM IST, 1:52 PM Local Time: The covers are coming off now! It looks like the rain has not completely stopped, and Perry is engaged in an animated chat with the umpires at the edge of the boundary ropes. Alright, the covers are coming back on! Here’s the official update: the match has been called off, and the Sixers win by 6 runs via the DLS method.
STAT ATTACK: Ellyse Perry brings up 300 runs in WBBL 10, equalling her own record from WBBL 04 as the joint-fastest player to reach this mark in a WBBL season, achieving it in just 5 innings.
8:17 AM IST, 1:47 PM Local Time: 9 runs off the 15th over and Sydney Sixers Women need 21 runs off 18 balls. Uh-Oh! The rain has picked up and players are going off the field. For your information, if the game doesn’t resume, the Sixers will win the contest as they are well ahead of the DLS par score.
