With that, the group stage of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 comes to an end. The first semi-final will be played between Australia Women and South Africa Women on Thursday (October 17). Do join us for that. Also, keep tuning in for more cricketing action all around the globe.
For now, this is Akshay Bhide, signing off, on behalf of my co-commentator Soumarya Dutta and scorer Raju Khariya. Until next time, cheers and good bye.
Hayley Matthews (West Indies Women Captain)- " Not many people gave us a chance but it was great to get the job done. The bowlers did very well early on and Joseph was superb with the bat. Probably for the first six or seven overs of our innings it got slightly easier. We backed ourselves to get over the line as we have been chasing well for almost a year now. We will take tomorrow off and then will be back in action. Every game will be massive and it will be a challenge. Everyone in the group knows what they need to do. We can do better in the field and we are peaking as a team at the right team. Hopefully we can do better in the semi final."
Heather Knight (England Women Captain): "Frustrating. But obviously tough team for me to sit out and watch. But credit to West Indies for coming out hard and taking on the attack. Some bad misses for us in the field.
We were far off. It was a turning track and at times, the ball was holding a bit. But they bat deep. The partnership between Hayley and Joseph was great.
(On her injury) Felt a little tweak. It was strapped and I was ready to come out but it's frustrating.
We played good cricket in the tournament. But in these type of tournaments, one slip-up and you are out. But proud of the girls."
Semi-Final Clashes in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024:
Semi-Final 1 - Australia vs South Africa
Semi-Final 2 - West Indies vs New Zealand
Qiana Joseph (Player of the Match): "Well, she told me to bat myself and watch the ball all the way through.
I was really aggressive. I took that aggression all the way through my innings.
Well, I like the competition in the end. But I backed my skills.
I feel really happy. I want to thank the Lord and I couldn't have done it without the support my Jesus Christ. Really thank you to the girls and qualifying for the semi-finals means a lot."
Player of the Match: Qiana Joseph
So, we have our four semi-finalists of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 - Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies.
10:42 PM IST and 9:12 PM Local Time- West Indies are through to the semifinals of the ICC WOMEN'S T20 WORLD CUP 2024!! They've triumphed over England Women by six wickets and it has been an incredible effort from them in a literal knock out situation. Alleyne finished the game off in style with a couple of boundaries in the end despite the little hiccup. They've chased down the score of 142 in just 18 overs.
West Indies were off to a flyer in the powerplay as they managed to score 67 runs from the first six overs. Qiana Joseph chanced her arms and she picked up a flurry of boundaries and sixes. Hayley Matthews gave her good company as she picked up the fours as well. The England seamers were off color and it cost them big time.
By the half way stage of the innings, England had dropped five catches and it seemed that the pressure of a virtual knock out game was getting to them. By the end of the 10th over West Indies were 89 for no loss and the target seemed to be a cakewalk for them as they needed 53 runs to win from 60 balls.
Nat Sciver-Brunt broke the partnership in the 13th over and it was the wicket of Joseph. Sarah Glenn chipped in with the big scalp of Matthews and England Women slowly started to creep back into the contest. The run scoring seemed difficult and West Indies Women needed 30 runs to win from the last 30 balls.
Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn fought hard for England with the ball but it was never going to be enough as Deandra Dottin played a dashing cameo after the initial fireworks by the two openers. In the end the girls from West Indies cruised to an easy win riding on the initial foundation set by the openers.
