Thamsyn Newton Profile, Career & Stats

Born in Paraparaumu, New Zealand, Newton started playing domestic cricket for the Wellington Blaze, before switching to Canterbury.

The right-arm medium pacer was impressive in her first few domestic seasons, and in one of her best domestic performances against her old side Wellington, Newton slammed 50 and showed no signs of nervousness on the big stage. Chasing 103, Canterbury lost two quick wickets, but Newton played a gritty knock and overcame the defending champions in the country’s premium T20 competition.

She was finally rewarded with a maiden T20I call-up against Sri Lanka in 2015. She bowled 4 overs and despite not picking up a single wicket, Newton was economical and kept it tight on one end. 

In the third T20I of the series, Newton made a big impression and picked up 3 for 9 in her four overs as the White Ferns won that game convincingly and Newton earned her first player of the match award.

Soon after she got her maiden ODI cap and in an ODI against Pakistan, Newton recorded the second-best bowling figures by a New Zealand Women against Pakistan Women, picking up 5 for 32 to completely rattle the opposition with her pace.

Newton was added to the White Ferns squad for the 2017 Women’s World Cup, but she did not live up to the expectations as the team crashed out of the group stage.

Newton has also represented the Perth Scorchers in the WBBL competition. 

An aggressive fast bowler, Newton started out playing in a small town and a few years later was in the New Zealand squad. She has worked hard in the domestic circuit and it has paid off for her.
