One of the cleanest hitters of the cricket ball, Ricardo Powell is a former West Indies cricketer hailing from the land known to produce great cricketers. Powell was one of the bright prospects for the West Indian team during the early 2000s and was also compared to Pakistan’s big-hitting player Shahid Afridi.
Powell made it to first-class cricket at the age of 19 in 1996 and followed it up with a List A debut in the following year. A surprise inclusion in the 1996 World Cup squad and made his international debut at the biggest stage of them all. Powell played his first ODI against Pakistan at Bristol and a failure in the first game saw him sidelined from the rest of the tournament.
He bounced back after the World Cup and made a bigger impact, scoring his maiden international century chasing India’s total of 254/6, Powell single-handedly took the game away from India as he scored a blistering 124 of 93 balls hitting 8 sixes and by doing so he became the youngest West Indian to score an ODI century.
Powell could never be consistent and often had a string of low scores which reflects in his career average. Powell did spring up with occasional half-centuries which kept him in the side but the selectors sidelined him as an ODI player lacking the right temperament for Test cricket.
Powell moved from Jamaica in 2003 to his wife’s native country of Trinidad and took a break from the game. In 2006, Powell decided to play for Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indian domestic circuit. However, he had a poor outing as his last five innings with the domestic side yielded very low scores with two ducks to his name. Powell. Successive low scores for his team eventually led to Powell getting axed from the side.
