Joel Davies is one of the most exciting young all-rounders to emerge from Australian cricket in recent years — a left-handed batter and left-arm orthodox spinner with a calm temperament and natural flair for big moments. Born on 28 September 2003, Davies plays for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, having previously represented the Sydney Thunder.

A product of the Manly Warringah cricket system, Davies was already playing Sydney Premier Cricket at just 14 years of age. His rise through the ranks was swift — he captained NSW Metro to victory at the 2022 Under-19 National Championships, amassing 458 runs in six matches at an average of 114.50. His dominance at the youth level earned him a Big Bash contract with the Sydney Thunder for the 2022–23 season, where his sharp fielding immediately stood out. He announced himself with two catches and two run-outs on debut against the Perth Scorchers, adding to an earlier match where a direct hit from him had dismissed Tim David.

Davies’ talent soon caught the attention of the Sydney Sixers, who handed him a full contract ahead of the 2023–24 Big Bash season. He featured in the final that year at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where the Sixers narrowly missed out to the Brisbane Heat. Beyond the Big Bash, he also earned a rookie deal with New South Wales in April 2024, marking another step in his transition from a junior prodigy to a senior professional.

Internationally, Davies captained Australia’s Under-19 side against England in 2022 and later earned a maiden call-up to the senior Australian T20 squad for the 2023 tour of India — a clear indicator of the promise he carries.

Cricket runs deep in the Davies family. His older brother, Oliver Davies, also plays professionally, and the two share a remarkable cricket story — in 2018, both brothers scored centuries for Manly on the same day, while their father, Kevin, notched one for Warringah in the Shires competition. Through their mother, the brothers are also eligible to represent the West Indies, a team they grew up admiring.

Now part of the Sydney Sixers’ setup for BBL|15, Joel Davies continues to develop into a well-rounded cricketer. Whether it’s his sharp fielding, composed batting under pressure, or crafty spin bowling, he’s shaping up as a modern T20 all-rounder with the potential to become a key name in Australian cricket’s future.
