Hamish McKenzie has been one of the most promising spin-bowling stories to come out of Western Australia in recent seasons. A left-arm wrist-spinner, McKenzie has built his reputation on guile, flight, and an unflappable temperament that has earned him steady recognition at every level he has played.
Originally from North Sydney, McKenzie’s cricket journey took shape after he moved west and joined the Subiaco-Floreat club in the WA Premier Cricket competition. It was here that his potential blossomed. During the 2021–22 season, he dominated the competition, collecting 65 wickets across formats. His efforts earned him the prestigious Olly Cooley Medal as the league’s best player — a clear sign of his growing stature in Western Australian cricket.
Soon after, McKenzie was handed a rookie contract by Western Australia in May 2022. Later, he gained attention during a Western Australia XI's tour match against India, where he dismissed Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik.
He made his first-class debut for Western Australia in November 2023 and quickly showed signs of belonging at that level. In the same month, he also made his List A debut.
In the Big Bash League, where he made his debut in December 2023, McKenzie initially represented the Perth Scorchers before switching to the Melbourne Stars in 2024 on a two-year deal, seeking greater opportunities.
The 1999-born cricketer has often credited former Australian spinner Brad Hogg for helping him with his bowling skills.
With experience and confidence now behind him, he’s shaping up as a bowler capable of making a serious impact in domestic cricket — and perhaps beyond.
