Gary Craig Wilson is a right-handed batsman, a wicket-keeper, and a veteran of Ireland Cricket. Hailing from Dundonald, Wilson has been donning the Irish colors since 2007 and has been played for Derbyshire and Surrey in England's domestic competitions.
As a teenager, Wilson has represented Ireland in the U-19 World Cups of 2004 and 2006. After the marquee ICC event, the wicketkeeper-batsman received a national call-up for Ireland at the highest level. Wilson made his ODI debut against India in 2007 and has been performing regularly since then.
In 2010, Wilson scored his maiden first-class century for Surrey in the Championship. The stumper was part of the squad for the 2011 World Cup and during this tournament that the Irishman got his contract extension for Surrey.
Post Graeme Smith's departure from the club, Wilson was appointed as the captain and celebrated it by smashing an unbeaten 160 against Leicestershire in 2014. His maiden season as captain proved to the breakthrough season for Wilson as he stockpiled 2931 runs in 60 FC games and was equally impressive behind the stumps as he was involved in 32 dismissals. However, the Irishman left the club for Derbyshire in 2016.
Wilson was named as the specialist wicket-keeper in Ireland's 2015 World Cup squad, ahead of legend Niall O'Brien. During the ICC event, his knock of 80 runs against UAE at Gabba was regarded as one of the best from his bat.
In 2018, the keeper was part of the Ireland team for their maiden Test match, against Pakistan. Later that year, Wilson was named Ireland’s captain in the shortest format, and under his leadership, Ireland qualified for the World T20 of 2021. In 2019, Wilson became the fifth Irish cricketer 100 ODIs during the one-off match against England.
Wilson has been serving his country for more than a decade now. He holds vital prominence in Ireland’s growth in the recent past and also in earning the Test status. He has been a consistent performer for his counties over the years. Now that the keeper is at the fag end of the career, he can now hang up his boots, handing the gloves over to Lorcan Tucker.
