Amit Kumar is a leg-spinner from Jharkhand who built his reputation quietly as one of Ranchi’s most trusted net bowlers before earning an IPL contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Known for bowling at a brisk pace with a deceptive googly, Amit represents the group of domestic cricketers whose journey runs through years of unseen work rather than instant recognition.
Amit Kumar’s Early Life and Background
Amit Kumar’s cricket story began in Bihar’s Hamirpur district before his family moved to Ranchi in search of better opportunities. Inspired by India’s 2011 World Cup triumph, he joined a local academy and trained while taking up small jobs to support his expenses. At one stage, he even assisted groundsmen in preparing pitches and laying mats during district matches.
Gradually, local coaches and senior Jharkhand cricketers noticed his potential. Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem and others helped guide his progress, both technically and mentally. During difficult phases when opportunities were limited, seniors' encouragement kept him committed to the sport.
He frequently bowled in nets whenever international matches were played in Ranchi, which exposed him to established players early. Advice from experienced cricketers — including a conversation that reminded him to trust his process — helped shape his mindset during his formative years.
During his years as a regular net bowler in Ranchi, Amit frequently bowled to senior cricketers visiting the city, including MS Dhoni. In one interaction, Dhoni advised him to stay true to his strengths and to continue trusting the process that had brought him this far, rather than chasing quick results. The conversation became a turning point in his mindset, helping him remain patient during phases when opportunities were limited.
Amit Kumar’s Domestic Career
The T20 format has been central to Amit Kumar’s rise. He progressed through the Under-16, Under-19 and Under-23 levels before delivering strong performances in the C.K. Nayudu Trophy, where he took 17 wickets in seven matches, including a seven-wicket haul in an innings.
He also became a regular in Jharkhand’s T20 leagues and later joined the senior state side. During the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season, he was part of the Jharkhand squad that won the title, marking a major milestone in his domestic career.
Amit made his First-Class debut for Jharkhand against Odisha in January 2026. Though he has played just one game, the appearance marked his transition from age-group and T20 cricket into red-ball competition, an important step in his development as a spinner capable of bowling longer spells.
Long before selection recognition, he had earned a reputation in Ranchi as a dependable net bowler. Several international batters faced him in practice sessions, appreciating his quick leg-spin and difficult-to-read googly. Those sessions gradually built his confidence and visibility among scouts.
Amit Kumar’s IPL Career
Amit Kumar’s IPL opportunity arrived in dramatic fashion at the 2026 mini-auction when Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him for INR 30 lakh. Just days earlier, he had been invited for a trial but missed it after his flight was cancelled — something that briefly felt like a lost chance before the franchise showed faith in him anyway.
His name came late in the auction, and he learned about the selection through phone calls before the live broadcast finished. The moment was emotional for his family, marking the reward for years of persistence.
