Player Bio

In a game of thunderbolts and fireworks, Alice Davidson-Richards has always moved like the low rumble before the storm, easy to miss if you’re not paying attention, but impossible to ignore once she arrives. She’s not the kind of cricketer who kicks the door down. Instead, she lets her game do the knocking, measured, unflashy, and deeply effective. A seam-bowling allrounder by role, but a craftsman by soul, she belongs to the rare breed of players who grow into the spotlight rather than chase it.

Born on May 29, 1994, in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, Alice’s journey in cricket wasn’t one built on prodigious youth records or viral debuts. Her rise was layered, like the many hats she would go on to wear: bowler, batter, captain, domestic warrior, and international latebloomer. As a young girl in Kent, she grew up on the fields of Sevenoaks Vine, one of England’s oldest cricket grounds, absorbing the sport through community, repetition, and quiet discipline rather than grand ambition.

She made her county debut for Kent at the tender age of 15 in 2009. Early signs pointed to a player with balance, not just in her all-around abilities, but in her temperament. She bowled medium pace with a natural rhythm, generated awkward bounce from a high-arm action, and batted with uncomplicated technique. Kent, a side that boasted future England internationals like Charlotte Edwards and Tammy Beaumont, was an ideal environment for a teenager like Alice to hone her game.

Across more than a decade of domestic cricket, Alice became a stalwart of the women’s game in England. She played not just for Kent, but also for Yorkshire, with whom she later moved, and in The Hundred for Northern Superchargers and South East Stars in regional cricket.

Her England debut came as part of an experimental side on the 2018 tour of India, during a transitional period for the national team. Her ODI debut came on July 11, 2022, against South Africa at Northampton. In just her second ODI, she returned career-best figures of 3 for 35, including the prized wicket of Mignon du Preez.

Her medium pace may not hit 70mph, but she moves the ball off the seam and exploits angles with intelligent field placements. With the bat, she’s capable of rebuilding or accelerating the hallmark of a genuine No. 5 or 6. She’s not a six-hitter by design, but her strike rotation and understanding of tempo make her valuable in both 50-over and four-day formats.

Off the field, Alice is known for her humour, low-key personality, and love for cricket’s team-first ethos. She’s not a headline chaser, nor the type to celebrate loudly; instead, she represents a growing class of English players who’ve risen through the domestic system, weathered the frustrations of nonselection, and eventually forced their way in through sheer consistency.

What sets her apart isn’t just her talent, but the timeline. In an age where debuts come at 18 and careers peak at 25, Alice Davidson-Richards is a refreshing reminder that some stories are meant to unfold slowly. That grit, growth, and late breakthroughs are still possible in modern sport.
