On Sunday, May 3, Sunrisers Hyderabad hosted Kolkata Knight Riders at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. For match 45 of IPL 2026, the Men in Orange won the toss and opted to bat first. Notably, the Pat Cummins-led side were forced to make two changes, which includes a debut for Smaran Ravichandran.

For the unversed, Smaran Ravichandran is based from Karnataka. He was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025 as a replacement player for 30 lakhs. The 22-year-old was retained for IPL 2026 and had to wait a long time for his opportunity and IPL debut.

From Trials With RCB To Playing For SRH

Notably, Smaran Ravichandran also gave trials for RCB in the past and impressed the officials. However, he was unfortunate not to get picked in the 2025 IPL auction. 

“Right from the beginning, I've had the ability to clear fences. But I think there's still a fine line between formats, where in order to be really good at all three formats, you still have to learn to curb your game,” revealed Smaran Ravichandran, speaking to ESPN Cricinfo.

The disappointment to miss out on IPL contract didn’t last long as Smaran was roped in as a replacement for Adam Zampa by SRH in IPL 2025.

Impressive Domestic Tours From 2024-2026

Smaran Ravichandran made a name for himself during the 2024 Maharaja T20 when he slammed 302 runs in 9 innings, averaging 43.14. The impressive tournament helped him earn a place in the Ranji Trophy with the Karnataka team.

Further, Smaran grabbed the opportunity with both hands and amassed 516 runs in 10 innings, averaging 64.50 in that tournament. The Ranji Trophy highlighted the fact that Smaran is not a fluke, but a proper cricketing talent who needs to be nurtured.

Smaran’s breakthrough tournament was Ranji Trophy 2025-26, scoring 950 runs in 14 innings, averaging 86.36. Notably, he now has a chance to prove his mettle as a powerhitter on his IPL debut and make it memorable.
