Rishabh Pant’s omission from India’s ODI squad for the upcoming West Indies series has sparked a fresh debate among fans about his future in the 50-over format and his place in India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a 15-member ODI squad for the three-match series against the West Indies, beginning on September 27.
Rishabh Pant was among the players expected to return to the ODI setup, but the selectors have instead picked Dhruv Jurel alongside KL Rahul for the wicketkeeping duties.
Pant's latest snub has led to questions about whether he remains in India’s long-term plans for the 2027 World Cup.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has made several notable decisions while picking the squad for the West Indies ODIs. Ruturaj Gaikwad has returned to the ODI side, while KL Rahul has been named Shubman Gill's deputy in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is set to lead India at the Asian Games.
Pant, meanwhile, has not been included despite being discussed as a possible comeback option.
However, Pant has been named captain of the Rest of the India side for the Irani Cup against 2025-26 Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir.

Rishabh Pant’s exclusion quickly became a talking point on social media, with fans questioning his place for the ODI World Cup 2027.
One fan wrote that Pant had now been ‘sacked permanently’ from India’s white-ball teams. Another argued that Pant should have been selected in the ODI squad, particularly in the absence of Ishan Kishan.

When Did Rishabh Pant Last Play In An ODI For India?
Rishabh Pant last played an ODI on August 7, 2024, against Sri Lanka in Colombo. It was the third match of the ODI series, and Pant scored six runs from nine balls as India suffered a defeat.
Since then, he has not featured for India in the 50-over format. His absence from the current West Indies squad has therefore extended his wait for another ODI appearance.
