The Mumbai vs Karnataka Ranji Trophy Quarters witnessed a moment of magic as Mumbai opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, plucked a stunner to send Devdutt Padikkal back to the pavilion at a crucial juncture of the contest. The catch defied the laws of physics as the fielder hardly had any time to react, and yet, he took a blinder at slips.

Jaiswal, not known for his fielding skills, showcased excellent hand-eye coordination and took the catch of the most important player from the opposition team.

Jaiswal's stunner stuns Karnataka's Padikkal

In the fourth innings of Karnataka's chase, spin-bowler Tanush Kotian delivered a tossed-up ball that pitched and drifted away from Padikkal, who got an outside-edge as the ball flew quickly. Jaiswal was standing at first slip, and the fielder had a fraction of a second to react as he stretched out his left hand and grabbed the ball in the blink of an eye.

Jaiswal was ecstatic and had a jubilant celebration as Devdutt Padikkal, the best Karnakata batter was dismissed by a stunner. In a chase of 325, Padikkal was batting fluently on 39 and this is when the Mumbai opener brought his team back in the contest from out of nowhere.

The grab could also be hailed as the catch of the tournament, especially since it came at a crucial juncture.

Jaiswal’s catch keeps Mumbai in the hunt for a win

In the Quarters, Karnataka was set a target of 325, which was always going to be difficult for the team batting fourth. The side also suffered an early jolt as Mayank Agarwal departed early. However, this is where the turning point came as Padikkal and KL Rahul forged a crucial partnership.

KL Rahul breached the 50-run mark, and Padikkal was edging closer to the mark before disaster struck and the southpaw nicked one straight into the hands of Jaiswal at slips. Before the wicket, the Karnataka duo had added 84 runs for the second wicket, and were cruising towards the target.

The big wicket came in towards the end of the day’s play, and it brought a new batter, Karun Nair, to the crease, who survived 22 balls as Day 3 ended with Karnataka at 113/2, still needing 212 to win.

How Jaiswal performed in quarterfinals for Mumbai

The surface at Mumbai’s BKC Ground had something for the seamers in the initial few days, and Jaiswal, the left-handed batter, was caught off guard in the first innings. He played just 12 deliveries and scord only 5 runs as the star player had a disappointing first innings outing.

However, things improved in the second innings as the wicket got better for stroke-making. Jaiswal scored a quick-fire 36 off 43 balls and added 77 runs for the opening wicket to lay the perfect foundation for the middle-order batters.

Despite not having the best of games with the bat, Jaiswal turned up for Mumbai at the most important moment, and that too with his fielding when he took a sharp catch to send Karnataka’s best batter to the pavilion.
