Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav escaped a major injury scare against Netherlands in match number 36 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The incident occurred in the final over of the Netherlands run chase at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

In an attempt to catch the ball between extra cover and long-off, Suryakumar Yadav nearly collided with teammate Rinku Singh. The Indian skipper also failed in his catching attempt, and was struck on his chest by the ball instead.

Indian fans sigh in relief as Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku apply timely brakes

Chasing 194 for a win, Netherlands reached 166-6 by the end of 19 overs against India at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on February 18. With Netherlands requiring 28 more runs to win off the remaining six deliveries, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav called back Shivam Dube to bowl the final over of the game.

In the first ball of his over, Netherlands batter Zach Lion-Cachet whacked the slower delivery outside off stump towards his off side. The ball went high up in the air, with Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh converging from extra cover and long-off regions respectively.

While both Suryakumar and Rinku were sprinting towards the ball, and towards each other, the two cricketers applied brakes just in time, much to the relief of Indian cricket fans. Even though the two Indian stars escaped from a major collision and a possible injury midway into the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav still got hit on his chest from the ball as he made a mess of his catching attempt.

The Indian skipper collapsed on the ground and was seen in visible discomfort for a while before play resumed at the venue. As it turned out, the senior campaigner got back up and is looking fit and ready for the remainder of the tournament.

India trump Netherlands by 17 runs

India eventually overcame Netherlands by 17 runs. Shivam Dube picked up the wicket of Zach Lion-Cachet in the final over to claim figures of 2-35. The star Indian all-rounder also bludgeoned 66 runs from just 31 balls with the bat as India mounted 193-6 in 20 overs after winning the toss.

Dube smeared four boundaries and six huge sixes as he turbo-charged the Indian innings at the death alongside fellow all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

Ace spinner Varun Chakravarthy unfurled the spell of the match by picking up figures of 3-14 from his three overs. The cricketer knocked over Netherlands opener Max O'Dowd before getting rid of Colin Ackermann and Aryan Dutt in successive deliveries.

India remains unbeaten to top Group A

The outcome also marked India’s fourth straight win in the ongoing 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, the ‘Men in Blue’ finished the opening round of the tournament at the top of the Group A points table with four wins in four games at a formidable NRR of 2.500.

The Indian team will now face South Africa in their first Super 8 match later this week on February 22 in Ahmedabad.
