As the Gujarat Titans (GT) thrashed the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at home, the five-time champions slipped a position on the points table. Although captain Ruturaj Gaikwad scored his maiden IPL 2026 fifty, CSK lost to the Shubman Gill-led side by a lopsided margin.

CSK faced a batting collapse for the ages, being reduced to 37/4 and 96-5 at one stage, though Gaikwad batted slowly but scored an unbeaten 74 off 60 balls to take the team total to 158-7.

On a quick Chennai track, the CSK bowlers failed to leave a mark, with Sai Sudharsan single-handedly taking them home with his knock of 87 runs. The home bowlers could only bag two wickets, as GT chased down the target in 16.4 overs.

Sarfaraz Khan abused for a misfield

Such was the day for CSK on Sunday afternoon. Apart from Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad, no other Chennai bowler could bag a wicket vs GT. Not only the bowlers, but the fielders also had a poor show on the field.

In the 12th over of the chase, Jos Buttler cut a back of length delivery from Noor through the offside. Sarfaraz Khan, standing at point, misfielded, allowing the GT batter to snap a brace. Sarfaraz's misfield angered CSK's wicketkeeper, Sanju Samson, who hurled abuse at the point fielder.

Although Samson cursed the fielder in his mother tongue, the fans have decoded it and put the translation on social media.

No runs for Sanju Samson, no party for CSK

CSK are not having a good time in the IPL 2026. After eight matches, they have won just three, bringing Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy under intense scrutiny.

However, Sanju Samson has been their batting this season, scoring 304 runs in 8 innings at an average of 50.67 with a whopping strike rate of nearly 170. Interestingly, Samson has contributed mightily in all CSK wins this season, scoring two hundreds and a 48 in those games.

Having said that, the Chennai management had invested heavily in the Sanju Samson trade from the Rajasthan Royals. India’s T20 World Cup hero was acquired by letting go of Chennai’s two supremely talented all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.

Headaches not ending for CSK

MS Dhoni, who sustained an injury pre-season, has yet to recover from his recurring calf injury. Due to that same injury, the former CSK captain hasn't played any games in IPL 2026. Currently, he is rehabbing with the team management, but there are serious concerns over his participation in the upcoming matches.

Meanwhile, Khaleel Ahmed, who has been CSK's best bowler in recent years, was ruled out earlier and underwent surgery after a quadricep injury.

Meanwhile, Akeal Hosein faced a brutal cheek injury while attempting a catch in the CSK vs GT match. Fortunately, the left-arm spinner didn't face any serious injury as he resumed play soon after.

Nevertheless, CSK will next be in action against the Mumbai Indians in the IPL El Clásico at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday (May 2).
