Vaibhav Suryavanshi was dismissed for a paltry two off four balls against USA Under-19 in the opening match of the 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup. Opening the innings alongside captain Ayush Mhatre in a chase of 108 at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, Suryavanshi got knocked over by USA fast bowler Ritvik Appidi in just the third over of the run-chase.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s latest failure with the bat marked his second successive low-score this tournament, after he was dismissed for just a single in India’s warm-up fixture against England Under-19 in Bulawayo earlier this week.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi exposed again as star opener flops on the big stage

Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi failed to deliver the goods on the big day for the Indian Under-19 team at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Thursday, January 15. Turning up for Team India in the opening match of the 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, the blistering left-handed opener was dismissed for just two off four balls by USA U19 paceman Ritvik Appidi.

The incident occurred in the third over of the innings, when Vaibhav Suryavanshi attempted to step out of the crease to whack Ritvik Appidi towards the boundary. However, Appidi’s length delivery on leg stump cramped the Indian opener, who merely managed to land an inside edge on to the stumps.

Earlier in the day, Indian Under-19 captain Ayush Mhatre won the toss and opted to field first in Bulawayo. His bowlers responded by dismantling the entire USA U19 line-up for just 107 in 35.2 overs. Fast bowler Henil Patel himself claimed five of those wickets at an expense of just 16 runs in his seven-over spell. After jolting USA’s top-order, Henil mopped up their tail with two quick wickets.

His teammates Deepesh Devendran, RS Ambrish, Khilan Patel and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi himself all chipped in with a wicket each.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi fumbling at the wrong time

Vaibhav Suryavanshi was selected in India Under-19 squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup on a trail of his impressive run for the India U19 and Bihar cricket teams. Shortly after becoming the youngest cricketer in IPL history by making his Rajasthan Royals debut in 2025 last year, the youngster exploded with some crucial runs on tough tours of Australia and England.

The blistering left-handed opener also whacked 144 off just 42 balls against UAE in the 2025 Asia Cup Rising Stars in Doha. In the resulting Under-19 Asia Cup in the UAE, Vaibhav Suryavanshi hammered 261 runs in just five innings at a blistering average of 52.20 and an astonishing strike rate of 182.51.

During his brief Bihar stint in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy season, Suryavanshi tonked 190 runs off just 84 balls in his team’s Plate Group match against Arunachal Pradesh in Bihar. His innings helped Bihar rack up a slew of batting records, including the highest-ever team total in List A cricket history by slapping 574-6 in 50 overs.

Needless to say, the youngster was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’ for his efforts, and his innings justified the selector’s repeated faith in him.
