Tim David made his return to Australia squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. It is worth noting that a month-and-a-half ago, the hard-hitting middle-order batter suffered a grade 2 right hamstring strain during a BBL 2025-26 match for the Hobart Hurricanes.

The injury prompted Cricket Australia to exclude Tim David from Australia’s three-match travelling party to Pakistan, before calling him back for the showpiece event in the Indian subcontinent.

Tim David back in Australia squad, but with conditions

Tim David has hinted that he will likely miss Australia’s Group Stage matches of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The cricketer recently made his return to Australia squad after missing the three-match T20I series in Pakistan owing to his injury.

His latest hint indicates that Cricket Australia and the Australian team management likely want a “fully fit” Tim David for the latter stages of the tournament.

It is worth noting that the 29-year-old was already cleared to play the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for Australia after attaining full recovery from his hamstring injury during rehabilitation.

While speaking with cricket.com.au, Tim David stated that he is aware about possibly getting managed by the team management during the Group Stage of the competition. He said, “I wanted to bat a bit longer, but they just said, ‘Hold your horses for a bit’”.

Tim David likely to miss Ireland, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Oman matches

If the Australian team management decides to give Tim David a rest from the Group Stage, the cricketer will likely miss Australia’s first four matches of the tournament. The most crucial match David will be forced to miss will likely be Australia’s impending Group B clash against Asian giants and co-hosts Sri Lanka.

The Australian team is scheduled to launch its ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign with a match against Ireland on February 11 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Injury woes haunt Australia

While Australia is aiming to manage Tim David amidst his recent recovery from injury, the 2021 winners have already been plagued with numerous other injury concerns. Late last month, Australia Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins was ruled out of the tournament due to his back injury.

Cricket Australia named Ben Dwarshuis as Cummins’ replacement owing to his wicket-taking spree in the BBL 2025-26 season for the Sydney Sixers.

Fellow legendary paceman Josh Hazlewood was also ruled out of the showpiece event a couple of days ago owing to his failure in attaining full recovery. Hazlewood also missed the entirety of the 2025-26 Ashes series back home against England.

Under the leadership of Mitchell Marsh, Australia’s current understrength side will tackle the Group B stage of the tournament. As per the schedule, Australia will face Ireland on February 11, Zimbabwe on February 13, co-hosts Sri Lanka on February 16 and Oman on February 20. Their Group B matches will be hosted by Colombo and Kandy.
