Shaheen Afridi played in Pakistan’s first three T20 World Cup matches, but after strings of poor performances, the speedster was rightly dropped from the playing XI for the match against Namibia. However, eyebrows were raised when Shaheen was once again drafted back into the side for the Super 8 match vs England.

On a spicy deck that had assistance for the pacers, Shaheen had a hunger in his eyes to perform, and the pacer didn’t disappoint as he ran through England’s batting lineup and single-handedly kept the Men in Green in the contest.

He picked up the wickets of Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, and Jacob Bethell inside the powerplay as Pakistan had the upper hand in the first 6 overs of the England chase. Against the Three Lions, Shaheen looked a completely different bowler, as he looked threatening, and was making the ball talk.

Drop Shaheen Afridi vs Sri Lanka: Huge Truth bomb dropped

However, despite Shaheen’s brilliance against England, his father-in-law, and former Pakistan cricketer, Shaheen Afridi, has dropped a bombshell on his T20 World Cup future. In a live discussion on SAMAA TV, Afridi urged Mike Hesson to drop Shaheen, and the reason is not related to his performance.

" Everyone was criticising Shaheen, but he wasn't listening. So, I decided to bash him, and deliberately made him angry, so that he channels the anger towards the right direction (taking wickets vs England)."

When the host cheekily stated that Mike Hesson should contact Shahid Afridi (on how to bring the best out of Shaheen), Afridi dropped a truth bomb.

"I will drop Shaheen for the Sri Lanka game as well. I will hurt his ego. That is how he will perform."

Shaheen saved his sinking T20 career with England redemption

Before the match against England, Shaheen had played in three T20 World Cup 2026 matches, and he had only scalped 3 wickets with an economy touching 10 runs per over. He was the difference maker (in a negative sense) between Pakistan and India, and after the game, the management took a bold call to drop him.

His replacement, Salman Mirza, had done well against Namibia, and his World Cup journey was going downhill. However, he was once again trusted for the match vs England, and the pacer looked like his former self as Shaheen rattled through England’s top-order.

He ended the match with figures of 4 for 30 as the left-arm seamer was the lone warrior for his side in a heartbreaking loss.

Pakistan needs Shaheen to deliver vs Sri Lanka

Defeat against England meant that Pakistan needed to rely on other results to qualify for the T20 World Cup semis. Their last game is against Sri Lanka on Saturday, and the team has no other choice but to win that contest.

For that riveting do-or-die match, Pakistan needs Shaheen to step up against the Lankan batters. Against them, Shaheen has played just two matches, but the speedster has racked up 6 wickets, with an economy of just 6.5.

If Pakistan wants to win the match and reach the semis, Shaheen has to bring his best against the host nation.
