In a major development, Scott Edwards has stepped down as the captain of Netherlands team, as confirmed by the Cricket Netherlands on Saturday, August 1.
Notably, Edwards had been leading the side since June 2022 after taking over from Pieter Seelaar during England's tour of the Netherlands.
During his time as captain, Scott Edwards led the Netherlands in 56 ODIs. The team won 24 matches and lost 29, making him one of the most successful captains in Dutch cricket.
Scott Edwards Announces His Decision
According to Cricinfo, his captaincy came to an end after the Utrecht leg of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 matches on Friday. While speaking to his teammates in a video shared by the KNCB, Edwards announced his decision to step down.
"Apologies for sort of springing this one on you guys. I'm actually stepping down from the captaincy from here," Edwards told his team-mates in a video released by KNCB (the Royal Dutch Cricket Association).
"I think, yeah, it's sort of something Cookie [Ryan Cook, the head coach till June 25] and I have been speaking about and I've sort of been, yeah, speaking to a few different people about it, and this is sort of the time that feels right for me, I think," he added.

Scott Edwards' Successful Captaincy Journey
Although Scott Edwards has not been as successful with the bat as many would have expected, he made a huge impact as the captain of the Netherlands.
Under his leadership, the Dutch side qualified for the 2023 ODI World Cup and produced some of the biggest wins in their cricket history.
Most importantly, Netherlands defeated South Africa in Dharamsala and Bangladesh in Kolkata during 2023 ODI World Cup. Moreover, Edwards captained Netherlands in 56 ODIs, the highest number of matches led by any Netherlands captain. During this period, the team registered 24 wins and 29 losses, making him the captain with the most ODI victories for the country.
Meanwhile, Lucas Petrus still holds the best winning percentage among Netherlands ODI captains at 43.75%, while Edwards is close behind with a 42.85% win rate.
Apart from ODIs, the 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batter also captained Netherlands in 50 of the 86 T20Is he has played.
Who Will Lead Netherlands After Scott Edwards' Resignation?
Following Edwards' decision to step down, Bas de Leede will lead Netherlands for the remainder of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, according to Cricinfo.
The 26-year-old all-rounder is considered one of the team's most important players because of his contributions with both bat and ball. Although he has not previously captained the Netherlands at the international level, the team has shown confidence in his leadership abilities.
Meanwhile, Netherlands are currently 2nd in ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 standings, behind the USA.
